I've been using iMessage on my iMac and when I hit the "return" key to make a new paragraph, it sends the message. It seems that I am unable to make a new paragraph. When I receieve imessages from my friends on iPhones, they are capable of making paragraphs. When I go to "format", paragraph is greyed out.
I just wonder if it's something I'm doing wrong? Here's a screenshot. Thanks.

Hi,
iChat 2 through 6 and Messages use the ALT + Enter/Return keys to create a New Line/paragraph in a text chat.
(iChat 1 may have as well but I never tested that version)

The Return key is not the Send key (ergo you can double click it to create line space/paragraph)

My 2003 G4/1Ghz dual processor tower has an ALT labelled key.
It is the Option key as you discovered.

One more question: Is there a way to make Paragraphs in Message on the iPad, using the built in keyboard? There is no Alt key. I get texts from friends using Messages on iPhones and they can make paragraphs, but I can't do so on the iPad. Thanks.

Ralph, there is no Alt key on my iMac keyboard, and Command key + return does not work. Any ideas which keys to use?
I did additional research on Mac USB keyboard with Numeric key pad, and found that the Option key is used like Alt.
So Option Return works to enter a Paragraph. Wonderful.
