USB hubs causing kernel panic/crash ?

I have tried 2 different USB hubs. The first was an internal hub in an PCI-e slot.

I had to remove it due to regular kenel panics.

I then tried an external hub, and have similar results, although less ofter.

I've had to remove that as well.

Unfortunately, the PPC based G-5 quad core only has 3 USB ports on the back, so it's lacking.

Any suggestions?

Am I doing something wrong?

Sorry I took so long to answer....

It IS a powered hub.

However, I wasn't supplying power to it since I didn't have any devices requiring power... like ipods, etc.

So, if I plug it in, will it prevent crashes?

What's odd is that the internal PCI-e slot USB expander hub caused kernel panics far more than the external hub does. I had to remove the card to stop it. Maybe I did something wrong there as well.

I would be very grateful for any and all comments.

Thanks,

Cool Hand

OK.

I reconnected the external USB hub, powering it with the power supply.

I have everything running through the hub.... keyboard, scanner, 2 printers.

I've run it for 5 hours this afternoon.... with no problem.

More tomorrow.

So far so good !!!

If this continues I will post the hub information to share it with everyone!

Thanks,

Klaus !!!

UPDATE . . .

I have now run the external hub for 6 hours today after 4 hours yesterday.

NO crashes or kernel panics...

NONE.

It is plugged into the power supply that came with it.

Oddly, when it previously crashed, there were no power hungry devices connected to it.

They were all 100volt items or the keyboard/mouse.

More as it develops.

OK.

Here's my final update...

I've run the external USB hub with the power supply PLUGGED IN for A WEEK of 8 hour a day use....

and NO CRASHES.

THANK YOU KLAUS !!!

(before this I ran it without external power and it crashed almost daily...)

Here's the product I'm using...

It is a TRIPP-LITE 7 PORT EXTERNAL USB HUB.

You MUST use it with the power supply plugged in.

Again,

THANK YOU KLAUS !!!
