My fan goes on in the middle of the night. Hitting sleep turns it off but why does it come on with all programs closed?

My fan goes on in the middle of the night when all programs are closed. Hitting the sleep button turns it off but why would it come on in the first place? The Mac tech hasn't been able to duplicate the fan turning on as it is intermittent. Anyone had this problem?
