As I said downgrading the iOS is not supported by Apple.

When you restore the iPod to factory serttings/new iPod the iPod always ends up with the latest iOS available for that model iPod.

Well the only way I can think of downgrading software is making a hard reset of your ipod: setting it up as a new ipod, and not upgrading when you're asked to.

However, if you do this, you'll go back to 4.0.1 -I assume you have an iPod 4th gen- and you'll be asked to upgrade directly to 6.0.1.

Yes that's what happened to me. I upgraded to 6 and found my iPod was unusable (very slow and apps crashed). I tried to reset to factory settings and it wiped my iPod with a fresh iOS 6 install. This is VERY misleading and I wonder when someone will have a class action lawsuit in order to force apple into downgrading iOS or at least allow a reset to the original factory iOS version. My 4th gen iPod is currently useless.
