Q: i always put my computer to sleep , cause i was told b y a friend if u shut down and start up that it wears out the hard drive , firstly is this correct

I always put my imac to sleep when finished .cause a mate told me that shutting down and restarting wears out the start upo , is this correct,

secondly i have purchased a apple wireless mouse if i put imac to sleep and turn off mouse imac immediately awakes , how can i stopo this

or do i have to shut down in order to turn off mouse .NB I had a wireless logitch mouse which allowed me to put imac to sleep and turn off mouse

    1. Put it to sleep or shut it down. Makes no difference.

     

    2. Correct. First turn of the mouse, then the computer. This is because manipulating the mouse wakes up any sleeping Mac.

    Hey Kappy,

    Sorry bit of a dummy first time on discussions, so in other words i shud sahut down each time , noit put to sleep,

    and cant overide this with apple mouse ,

    No, what I said was it doesn't matter whether you put it to sleep or shut it down. It wakes up faster than it boots up, so putting it to sleep just means it will be ready to use quicker.

     

    If you don't want the movement of the mouse to wake up the computer then don't touch the mouse after you put the computer to sleep. Use the keyboard shortcut to put it to sleep - COMMAND-OPTION-EJECT.
