I would like to record a lengthy video and save up my free space by not recording 1080/720p video. Is this possible? Any suggested apps that can do this maybe? Sa record videos on VGA quality only?

While difficult to do, you could video record with the front camera. That is not HD. Which iPhone are you using? I believe there may be a couple of apps in the App store. You would need to do a search and decide if any meet your needs.
iPhone 5, the front facing cam takes 720p videos. Is it possible to know which app exactly does a good job in downsizing the videos to vga quality? Thanks
I believe "Almost DSLR" will do what you want.
I just tested it and it gives you the choice of 720p or 1080p videos, using the main camera
Or 480p (still can't edit a post on an iPhone)
Sorry, I missed the iPhone 5 in your profile. The only way to know what the apps do without purchase is to read the reviews, or if someone else provides you some feedback here in your post. I do not use any so I couldn't help you any further.
