13" rMBP has delay before charging light comes on - anyone else seen this?

When I connect the magsafe connector to my new 13" Retina Macbook Pro, there is often a delay before I see any light on the magsafe adapter. I *think* the delay is longer the more the battery is depleted. The delay is up to 45 seconds, and it's a bit disconcerting - you're never quite sure whether it's plugged in properly, or whether you've forgotten to switch on the powerpoint! Anyone else seen this?

Thanks.

Thanks, Courcoul. Do you have a Retina MBP too? A second or two is what I've experienced on all other Apple laptops, but, as you say, 30 or 40 seconds seems excessive. If you do have a Retina, have you seen what happens if the battery is fairly depleted? I rang Apple support. The guy put me on hold for a bit while he tested a couple of Retina MBPs himself. He said he experienced the same issue, but hadn't noticed it before. Just wanted to make sure others have seen this too. Oh, and yes, I've done an SMC and a PRAM reset.

I don't, but my boss just got one. Unfortunately (the following will probably irk more than one of the locals... 😀), battery life has been so good for her that she doesn't even carry the power brick anymore. When we took it out of the box the first time and I plugged it in to update all the missing patches & migrate her stuff, I had no idea to watch what the MagSafe 2 would do, so I don't remember if this delay presents itself on a brand-spankin-new Retina.

And, of course, this may be a clue to the mystery. Maybe it's a MagSafe 2 thing....

It was interesting. I rang Apple, and the guy got me to hold on while he checked other rMBPs. He came back and said they all did it. I didn't really believe this, since mine was intermittent, and maybe dependent on the battery charge at the time. I let the whole thing go. It wasn't that big a deal . If the light didn't come on, I could usually remove and reseat the Magsafe adapter and things would be fine,

And then a couple of weeks later, I got a call out of the blue from Apple saying they wanted to "capture" my machine for further anaylsis, and that if I was OK with that they would send me a new machine. They even let me keep the old one until the new one arrived (with a credit card guarantee), then I sent the old one back. So obviously this must have been a known issue.

And the new one? Still has the same intermittent problem! Doesn't really seem to affect anything though. I let my email contact at Apple know this, but didn't get any further feedback.

Is yours intermittent too? Sometimes the light does come on straight away and sometimes not?

Had the opportunity to use my boss' 15" rMBP. Sure enough, a 2-3 sec delay from when you put the MagSafe2 in place and the light comes on. Plus it always comes up green but will switch to orange if needed, after a further delay, usually longer than the first.

All this is purely courtesy of the SMC, as the power brick only has two conductors in the wire and the light show is run locally on the tip of the connector.

Retrospectively, one thing I failed to check is what happens when you plug the MagSafe first and the power brick to the wall socket last. Will there also be a delay?

Interesting...mine was doing the exact same thing. I even timed it yesterday and it took 40 seconds. I was in no mood to exchange it as it had taken me about 2 days to get all my stuff on it and its been covered all over the body with a protector as well. This is what i did though and it seems to work for me. I plugged the charger into a lone socket (previously it was plugged into a multi socket adapter) and I replaced the cable that goes from the power brick to the wall (I had a spare one my partner bought me) and for the last 5 times its come on almost instantly. Even after leaving it all night off charge and charging it first thing in the morning it just worked! I recommend you try someones elses power adapter and see if the same thing happens. The power adapter my partner bought me was a 15 inch retina one as I figured I best get the highest power one as macs dont draw any more power then they need and if i swapped machines maybe to a 15 the adapter would still be adequate. Where is your charger plugged? Into a lone socket?

Mine's into a power board, not directly into a socket. Please report back whether you continue to have success. I'm pretty sure mine's worse when the battery is more depleted, but can't be sure. Definitely not the adapter itself, because when Apple sent me my new machine and I had both for a short time I tried both adapters and they both had the problem.

I have an 11-inch (non-retina) mid-2011 Macbook Air doing exactly the same thing. This has only started recently, but it has happen three different times. When the battery is low (this morning it was 8%) - it takes roughly a minute before the magsafe connector's green-then amber light comes on and for the MBA to show that it is charging.

First two times this happened, I was working on a critical work project and thought the charger or connector had gone bad (PANIC), but this morning, I just waited without touching anything and it came on by itself. I'm getting a new charger today, just in case.

I get the same problem. Mine can take several minutes, possibly up to 10+ minutes before the Magsafe 2 starts to charge. And I also get the impression, the more its charged, the shorter the delay in waiting for the green charge light. Which is a real problem when you are working away and you see the battery about to die, but on connecting the magsafe2, nothing!

I have a work around. If you can get hold of an 85W Magsafe 1, plus the Magsafe 1 to 2 adapter, the charger 'always' works instantly.

I have a retina, MacbookPro 15inch, core i7, SD ram. MacOS X 10.9.2.
