Why does my iPhone 5 not switch back to LTE after a call?

So I get that for calls the iPhone 5 will place it under 4G. Problem is, it won't switch back immediately to LTE after the call. I either have to toggle the airplane mode on and off or toggle the cellular data switch on and off. It doesn't happen every single time but it happens frequently enough.

To me, that doesn't sound like "it just works." I'm savvy enough to know to toggle in order to get LTE back on but how about those less tech savvy?

To add, I did see a Genius for this issue and another data issue. He acknowledged that the issue happens to him as well, but said that it's because the LTE towers get overloaded or something like that. Basically, he's saying it has something to do with the carrier. I just don't buy that.

I then just spoke to ATT, and they said that if you place any kind of data right after your call (say you browse the internet immediately after a call or recieve an email right after your call), you will stay on whatever network speed you are on (4G in my case). Then he said, if I am 100% sure that I am not receiving nor sending any kind of data after my call and it still doesn't switch to LTE automatically, it's most likely a device issue. Basically saying I shouldn't have to toggle any switches or power cycle just get reconnected to LTE.

Thoughts? Anyone else having this issue?

Yup I'm definitely having this issue of the iPhone not switching back to LTE immediately or even sometimes ever as well. Many people are. There are quite a few discussions revolving around it on the web. Not too many are happy about it.

I think this is a phone issues. The iPhone 5 uses a single chip to switch between 4G to LTE and vice versa. It's Apple's software that controls that switching. It's also their software that I'd imagine should be responsible for determining that even if you used data after a call, you have an LTE phone, are in an LTE location, and therefore should be back on LTE after the call AND even if you used data right away. I do hope it gets fixed as soon as possible with a software update. This is one of the biggest annoyances of an iPhone 5.
