From iTunes 11 back to 10, but (-42408) error

I hated not having cover flow any longer, so I restored iTunes 10 from backup, but, problem. What file is the Apple Store looking for that I have not been able to restore following going back to iTunes 10 from Time Macine backup?

iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 12gig RAM/27" screen

It's been 24 hours since I deleted iTunes 11 app and reinstalled 10. No matter what I try, if I use 10 the Apple Store errors and does not recognize my computer any longer. That means my iPhone4 will not sync, except for the basic iOS that came with the iPhone: no purchased apps, no free apps, no music library, no movies, no books, just the basic iPhone4. iTunes 10 works ok if you do not need to sync an iPhone or buy anything from the store.

I have spent 4 hours with Apple Support. Nothing worked, so I ran Capture.app and sent the report to them. Their engineers will look at the reports and get back.

In the mean time, I have reinstalled OSX6.8, deleted iTunes 10 app, rebooted and from a downloaded DMG file, reinstalled iTunes 11. Everything works fine. Store recognizes me again, iPhone4 back to normal.

Waiting for the engineers report as to why I cannot reinstall 10. I hate losing Cover Flow. The 11 interface is too brite WHITE. Hard on my eyes on a 27" screen.

I don't advise anyone installing iTunes 11 until you are sure the interface is what you want. It ***** in my opinion. Will report back.

=Downgrading from iTunes 11 to iTunes 10.7=

You may be able to go back with Time Machine but this may involve restoring other items too (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4554293?answerId=20441404022#20441404022). Alternatively:

Back up your computer first, in case the unexpected happens.

Get iTunes 10.7. Apple does not keep many old versions on its web site. I always install iTunes by downloading the installer and then keep it on my archive drive so I can have access to old versions. This one is no longer openly linked on Apple's site:

iTunes 10.7 for OS X http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes10/041-7195.20120912.d3uzQ/iTunes10.7.dmg

Replace the iTunes 11 application with iTunes 10.7. Lion (OSX 10.7) and newer systems have iTunes integrated into the operating system and deleting is a bit more involved. The two ways I can think of to do this are:

1. Use the shareware Pacifist utility (http://www.charlessoft.com/) to install iTunes 10.7 including all associated system files.

2. Check this reference on how to delete the iTunes application itself:

Delete iTunes in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion - http://osxdaily.com/2011/09/13/delete-itunes-in-mac-os-x-10-7-lion/

After deleting the application there may be other files that need downgrading too. See the note about error -42408 at the end of this post. You may want to tuck these away somewhere safe until you have completed the installation of iTunes 10.7. I have not tested this but ideally if newer versions are not found then the installer will put in the old versions. This may include these files in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ which apparently get updated by iTunes 11:

AirTrafficHost.framework
CoreFP.framework
DeviceLink.framework
iTunesAccess.framework
MobileDevice.framework

After doing one of the two procedures above you will have to rescue your old iTunes library from your iTunes > Previous Libraries folder and rename it "iTunes Library.itl" (replacing the existing one in the iTunes folder) because a newer version of iTunes irreversibly updates your library file. Note, this will revert your library to version at the time of the upgrade and you will have to update any changes made since. See:

Alternatively, check https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4556384?answerId=20441424022#20441424022 which requires you have a Time Machine backup (though possibly if you remove the newer version of these files old ones may be installed with the iTunes 10.7 installer - untested).

The Time Machine backup did not work. Store will not recognize my computer using 10 anymore. Support guided me through removing specific files then reinstalling 10. Nothing worked. The entire issue is that the Store refuses to authorize my machine anymore unless I use 11, period.

Hope their engineers find something in the reports I sent.

To get rid of error -42408:

1. Close iTunes

2. From a terminal: killall iTunesHelper

3. Unplug any iOS devices

4. Restore these from a backup of /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ - you want to replace the current versions when Time Machine (or whatever you use) asks.

AirTrafficHost.framework

CoreFP.framework

DeviceLink.framework

iTunesAccess.framework

MobileDevice.framework

Reboot before loading iTunes or reattaching any iOS devices for good measure.

Good luck!

I had the same exact problem the OP had, tried to go back to 10.7 from 11 and got the dreaded -42408 error message. I tried connecting my iPod Touch and iPhone 4S and it said I have to restore. I followed McGroarty's post and went into my TimeMachine backup and located the files on my iMac and highlighted them and clicked Restore and they overwrote the new ones with my old ones and now I'm back in business! Thank you SOOO much! You rock! 😎

Unless I can get someone to send these iTunes 10 library files:

AirTrafficHost.framework

CoreFP.framework

DeviceLink.framework

iTunesAccess.framework

MobileDevice.framework

I will have to stay with my reinstalled iTunes 11. I can't use my iPhone4 properly without iTunes. My iMac Time Machine failed (erased all versions except last) the very same day I installed 11 for the first time. Therefore I have no backups. I am willing to bet that the file "iTunesAccess.framework" is the only file I need to reinstall 10's access to the Apple Store, but beggar's can't be choosers.

I have a 10.7 iTunes DMG installer, but I don't understand why it fails to install a compatible Store access file.

Glad everyone else was able to reinstall 10 successfully. Cover Flow is a gorgeous source to lose, and after doing my own covers on many old mp3 files too.

Hello friends, how are you all doing?

My issue here is that I went to try iTunes 11 (as lots of people)... Really seemed to me that there'd be cool improvements; didn't realize there'd be so many great features removed like that.

Well, of course I'd like to go back to 10.7! 🙂 I see that McGroarty's solution for this seems to work pretty easily and well for some of us.

The problem for me is that I don't have a backup/Time Machine at the moment!

And I want to keep my library as it is (was), but iTunes 11 turned the library files unreadable when I launch the 10.7.

So, I'm kinda stucked in this part of the process:

4. Restore these from a backup of /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ - you want to replace the current versions when Time Machine (or whatever you use) asks.

McGroarty (or anybody who could help): I'm wondering if it would be possible for you to enlighten me on that, somehow. Maybe if you send me the five folders you mentioned, then I could try and see if it works on my computer. Or - maybe you have another solution for this. I'd be immensely grateful.

Well, thank you very much!

See ya.
