EyeTV or Miglia?

I just purchased the Miglia MicroTV from the Apple store and am anxiously awaiting it. (Ships in mid May)

Has anyone tried this thing out yet? I am wondering if I should cancel it and order the EyeTv one instead. I don't really know what the difference is, but some people have told me that the EyeTV is better.

I have been using an EyeTV 200 with great satisfaction. Note that the Migla you mentioned does not come with a video encoder chip, and all processing of the signal is done by the Mac's CPU. This will take up the Mac's resources. If you are not looking for portability, the EyeTV is a better buy. It's a whole lot more powerful.

I think you'll be happy with the elgato box. I've had an EyeTV 200 for a while now, and it works great. The new software with the built-in program guide is a really nice addition.

It's also nice to know I'm pretty much "under the radar" when it comes to requiring DVR owners to watch commercials, which is definitely in the works. I love watching hour-long shows in only 42 minutes.

Enjoy!

I agree with you and would cancel the EyeTV 250 order and go with the EyeTV 200. I use the "200" for a great many things: to copy VHS tapes into my iMac and over to DVD, to watch television, to record television shows (I record Amazing Race religiously and burn it to VCD then play it at the office for co-workers - we LOVE it!) and I probably use the "200" more often to view VHS tapes right on the iMac then I do through my big 42" plasma - and that's because it is just so easy to use.

Yeah, when I record Amazing Race (above) I edit out the commercials in just a few minutes and burn it as VCD. I do this all the next morning in about 15 minutes (before I leave for work).

Addemdum: I burn to VCD (CDRW) because Microsoft's Media Player will play the VCD file and we're an all MS shop at work. I can then take it home and erase it. I could burn it to DVD or SVCD but we wouldn't be able to view it at work (no dvd player software and the media player won't play SVCD).

You might also find a used EyeTV 200 on eBay or somewhere on the 'Net at a lower price. The EyeTV people have released a universal binary of their software and that makes EyeTV 200 work really well on an Intel iMac!

I'm not necessarily recommending canceling the EyeTV 250 order to go with the 200. I can't really see any reason to go with the older hardware, every major feature has been duplicated in a much smaller package with the 250. Obviously, if waiting til May is not in the cards...then the 200 might be a better choice.

At the risk of getting terribly off-topic, I love me some Amazing Race.

There were some good reviews of the Miglia hardware (running EyeTV software) and the EyeTV 200 hardware done by the Arizona Macintosh Users Group.

They seemed to conclude that the EyeTV had the edge. Note that the Miglia hardware reviewed there connects via USB (as does the EyeTV 250) whereas the EyeTV 200 connects via firewire. I am loving my 200!
