in trying to update my dad's iphone version, i connected it to my computer. now i am getting the restore itunes symbol. what do I do? If I restore it, will he loose all of his contacts?

By the "restore iTunes symbol" do you mean a USB cable and the iTunes symbol? If so the device is in Recovery Mode and the device has already been erased and it needs to be Restored using iTunes. If your Dad had a backup you can Restore from backup after the iPhone is up and running. Follow the link for instructions > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

Anything that was on the phone is already gone. If he was syncing / backing up on a regular basis, everything should still be on whatever computer he was syncing with. If he was not, then it's gone.
