Just download Songbird. It synchs your itunes library and playlists and it's completely customisable, so you can get an add on or skin that works much like the Itunes of old. Also, Songbird is just a much better, more modernized experience and has all kinds of really cool features, like downloading entire playlists from music blogs with one click instead of manually downloading each mp3 individually. Itunes is old balls; if they want to get all Microsoft on us, I say find something new.
Looks like one of the main things I want is supported... smart playlists... and it would seem it also has 2 way device sync. If I should move away from the ipod, I am seriously going to take a good long look at Songbird.
If I can find a device that can deal with flac, I'd even upgrade my top faves to flac, leaving the rest as mp3-vbr.
Do you know if it's smart enough to automatically sync all songs that fit in a particular smart playlist (remove from the device what's not in the playlist and add to the device what's in the playlist if it's missing, and being a smart playlist will certainly change with every song played)? I have a very large library and the only thing that can hold it all is the ipod classic. The classic is good for the "leave no tunes behind" devices, but it has issues I don't like (I'm not going to spend $30 for a wall charger for work when I have a computer for power and it insists on going into disc mode when it detects it's plugged into a computer, stopping all playback. That and I use linux based drivers, giving me read access to the music db on my current itouch so I can query it for what was recently played... very very useful to know my library better). I don't want to use the classic as my main daily use player if I can use something else like the samsung galaxy player or sony walkman z. To do that I would need to be able to have songbird automatically remove songs from the player and add new songs, based on a smart playlist through normal use (I'm doing that now with itunes because the 64gb is about 10gb short of space and I need to swap out about 5 songs a day out of the 100 or so I listen to). Once set up, I don't want to think about what I'm trying to do... just plug in to computer, sync with media manager app, unplug, press play, get on with life.

No bro, you're not the only one. it definitely ***** big time. These geniuses took away the option to open 2 windows to edit your playlist on the go without using tue same freakin' window. I'm in a mac and i use it to play music from time to time in parties. It is a pain in the butt to play music in that piece of caca.

I have been in the technology business for years providing business solutions to rather large customers......if we did to our customers what apple has done with the new itunes and consequently us, we would have been sued up the wazoo! I have lost many hours of precious time with itunes as of late.

I have been a long time iTunes user which I've frustratingly and grudgingly, used to manage my iPhone since it's initial release. I have to say, I have never been a fan of having to sync stuff all the time to get your personal music, photos and video files on to your device of choice. However, I also don't have a lot of time to re-learn software every day and became fairly accustomed to the deficiencies of iTunes because I've loved my iPhone. However, since the upgrade to 11, I have to say that this is most certainly the straw that might break the camel's back. I'm totally sick of not having complete and total control over my device, data loss and lack of control over file management in general. If I want to sync, then I'll sync. If I want to drag and drop a single file on to my device, then I D*A*M*N well better be able to do that if I Ef fing want to!!!!!!! My wife has a macbook that is a few years old and I was strongly leaning toward getting her a new one but I have to say that given Apples complete and total lack of consideration for their user base, which has ****** me off beyond belief, I don't think I'll be purchasing any Apple products again any time soon. Dear Apple, you have NOT made your software better, easier to use, or created any semblence of enhanced usability with your version 11 release of iTunes. You have ****** off your user base and I would not be surprised if your arrogant stance drives a fair number of users away for good. As recent as a few months ago, I would have considered the thought of using an Android phone out of the question but now I'm strongly considering making the move. This is what happens when corporate arrogance and greed trumps customer service and always striving to meet the demands of the consumer. You've chosen to make iTunes your flagship software for consuming content yet you fail to realize how this software critically impacts your users decisions to continue using your hardware products. instead of giving your users more power and control, you continually erode our functionality, make your software frustratingly dumbed down so that only the dimmest of your users won't realize that they are being treated like children. FAIL BIG TIME!!!!!

turingtest2's reply contained exactly what I was looking for. Thankyou kindly.
You can restore much of the look & feel of the previous version with these shortcuts:
- Ctrl-B to turn on the menu bar.
- Ctrl-S to turn on the sidebar.
- Ctrl-/ to turn on the status bar.
- Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library to restore the previous search behaviour.

Maybe apple isn't arrogant or ignoring users on purpose. Those are 2 kinds of behaviors or personality traits of a company that all of a sudden turned stupid.
Perhaps Apple has all of a sudden hired in noob programmers and managers that don't know how to conduct good programming and customer relations. And this is manifesting itself as low-quality iTunes. eh?
Something like that.

I'm terribly distraught about the whole iTunes mess. I find I cannot get it to do anything I want to do and I just give up. I cannot even find out how to search for a song at the the iTunes store. Can you help me with this one? Disgusted with the whole thing.

This kind of "we know best" and "you know nothing" attitude reminds me of our current political environment. Making decisions based on what they think is a "solution", rather than paying closer attention to what actually serves their customers. It is also the result of the relative monopoly Apple enjoyed that insulated it's market segment from competitive pressures. But now that the i-device has to compete with other and perhaps better devices. Either they will pay closer attention to what their customers want, or they will become the "best buggy whip manufacturer" the world has ever known.

Thanks to whoever gave the info with using Ctl S to get the sidebar back. iTunes now looks ore like the old iTunes.
It still takes about 3 hours to do aback up and iOS upgrade. I gave I-Funbox ago. Wow, it's so simple to use. It's everything iTunes should be. You can transfer files, apps, photos, data to/from iPhone and pc. It's free and I recommend it.

I took the time to make this account only to agree with this post. I just spent about a half an hour dealing with this trash excuse for a layout. I was pulling my hair out trying to accomidate its mindblowingly stupid inconvienences. For instance, the way in which my library's search module produces results is out right ridiculous. It wastes so much time in that I have to continously switch back to the "Songs" section in order to see elements of my albums such as "play count" or "last played". Yet, the funny thing is that every time I do so, I just end up back up top at letter "A" where I must start again. The previous system just went right to the album as soon as you started typing in the name. That was MUCH better than this pointless classification system. Also, what happened to the pop-out feature for the Itunes store? That's extremely useful when I am naming songs on my imported albums. Now, everytime I switch back to my library, I lose track of the song or album I was looking at as it flips back to letter "A". This and a few other things make me really wonder what was going through their heads when they decided to turn the system into this fatuous piece of trash. Glad to know I'm not alone on this. Maybe next version will address some of these greivences..

It really makes me so mad everyday I have to open up this flaud app. I really try and make the best of it, but I still @#%$ing hate this %$#@. What the $#@% where they thinking and you know if Steve was alive today he wouldn't let this %$@# fly. APPLE, CEO, Dude if you can't do the job Job's did then step down and find a master performer to it, or step up your game. You are like a 15 year old kid with the keys to the kindgom. This goes to show the ill faided Iphone 4.2 and 5, imaps, the falling market shares and inovations. It's now a company that had went from lead to gold. The predictions seem to be correct about the fall of apple after Job's passing.
Angry as ****
