The column browser can only be enabled in certain views, Songs & Playlists.
You can restore much of the look & feel of the previous version with these shortcuts:
- Ctrl-B to turn on the menu bar.
- Ctrl-S to turn on the sidebar.
- Ctrl-/ to tutn on the status bar.
- Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library.
If you still want to roll back to iTunes 10.7 first download a copy of the 32 bit installer or 64 bit installer as appropriate, uninstall iTunes and suppporting software, i.e. Apple Application Support & Apple Mobile Device Support. Reboot. Restore the pre-upgrade version of your library database as per the diagram below, then install iTunes 10.7.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to scan the media folder and catch up with any changes made since the backup file was created.

your advice really helped me a lot. I have some other questions
In the older I tunes when I purchased music I could go to purchase folder while it was downloading and put into one of my playlists. I found what you said about placing items in play list, but I am not sure how to find the music i bought and downloaded.
Also in the menu on top of page I can't find a link to rented movies or tv shows.
Thanks and really appreciate your advice.

The big button near the top left lets you switch from Music to Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts etc, or use Ctrl-S to turn on the side bar which shows the sources & playlists in a column down the left hand side.

It does not show rentals. I have done all of this. I have the apple tv device and can stream from computer to tv and see the rentals and purchases their but would like to see the rentals from computer.
again I really appreciate your help in this.

I don't have any current rentals, nor do I have an Apple TV. I would expect rentals to display in the Movies section of the iTunes library with other content. Perhaps you would be better describing the problem in the Apple TV forum.
I just found it. I think I am ok now.

Hmmm, turningtest.... It shouldn't be nessary to read a test to use a program for common use. That's definitely not good UX. The werdict is still claer: iTunes 11 *****, and I'm chocked and extreemly disapointet that Apple totally neclect this thread.....
