Windows 8, iTunes 11 stops working when I try to search for song, or sync, or create playlist

(iTunes "Not responding" @ 16.9% CPU/20.8%Memory)... iTunes 10.7 worked properly... Did you TEST software before release? Steve Jobs wouldn't have been impressed!


Is there a way to "roll back" the update to the previous version of iTunes?

I’m not getting the error that you refer to "The item referred to by this shortcut cannot be accessed. you may not have the appropriate permissions".


...For me, It just takes a bit longer to load, then whenever I try to do ANYTHING it freezes up and windows shows it at "Not responding" I can sometimes wait it out (it sometimes starts working again after 10-20min, but most times not), but when/if it does start working the Program (iTunes 11) goes back to the start as if it had just opened. So when I try to "do it again", it freezes again!


I know that it is not my PC, it’s got to be a compatibility issue between iTunes and Windows 8. (My PC: Win8 x64, 6.00GB (RAM), Intel Core 2 Quad CPU - Q9550 @2.83GHz, on a 600GB - Velociraptor HD)


If I could get it iTunes be responsive on my pc, I would be fine with the changes... However, this release was a total Mess; they should have a way to "roll back the iTunes to the previous version... at least until the issue is resolved!!!


(I don’t have a copy of iTunes 10.7 otherwise I would reinstall it... I’ve only done that automatic update since about iTunes 8)

SO... I successfully ended up going back to 10.7 (following is the process I used to do it, as well as the references I used)


WARNING: By attempting to follow the procedures that I used... you acknowledge that if there are any purchases lost during the downgrade you take sole responsibility... I took the risk because I have my music on CD's, I regularly backup my apps to CD... and if I lose anything I will replace it myself (even if I have to repurchase it)


-It took a while, but it worked out...


1. I downloaded the iTunes 10.7 installer (iTunes 64bit: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1577).


2. I uninstalled iTunes 11 and restarted my computer.


3. I installed iTunes 10.7 (when installed I was unable to run because the "iTunes Library.itl" file in my computer was from the iTunes 11 program) I did a file search for "iTunes Library.itl" and opened the file location (my file was located in: C:/Users/Spencer/Music/iTunes)

4. I "right clicked" on the folder Named "Previous iTunes Libraries" and opened in new window.


5. I located the most current file (prior to the 11 upgrade) and drag and dropped it into the location of the "current" *itl file and replaced.


6. Since i keep my iTunes on my C: drive and all my music, apps, movies, podcasts, etc. on Drive D: I had to add the folder back into iTunes manually (I opened my D:/ drive and I just "dragged" my folder labeled Media and dropped/"Linked" it to my iTunes interface window on the desktop.


-I lost my playlists, but I did retain my movies that I redeemed via Blu-ray purchases. So I’m happy to be back on iTunes 10.7 (maybe in a week or 2 I’ll go back to 11, but for now... I would rather have a stable running program, than one that looks lice but does not work!

Oke understood. Good Luck please keep the following info with you if decide again to "upgrade" to 11


Try this to bring back the "old" iTunes view

Ctrl + / brings back the status bar

Ctrl + s brings back the Side Bar

Ctrl + B brings the Menu Bar back.


Other handy shortcut is Ctrl + Shift + B it will bring back the column browser.


All these keys are under the View menu option .


Click on the magnifying glass next to search box and disable "search entire library" this makes the search the same as the old Search

ATTENTION ! ! ! Correction to make the process of changing back to 10.7 easier ! ! !


ON STEP 5: instead of "drag and dropping" instead "copy and paste" or "Drag+Ctrl" if you have the two windows open, then rename the .itl file to "iTunes Library.itl" and this will retain your Playlists, movies, purchases without having to manually add them back into your iTunes.

My bad...


I misread the thread that I referenced, and so I forgot to remove the date from my backed up file so that it was "iTunes Library.itl".


When I deleted the one that iTunes 11 .itl file, iTunes created a new one.


It DID NOT recognize the file I put in the correct folder because I had the INCORRECT name.


(Instead of using the one I dragged and dropped [because iTunes did not recognize the file with the date attached], MAKE SURE that you rename it WITHOUT the date. otherwise it will cause an even harder time converting back)
