how to change name in users folder on home icon

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro 13" and transferred a few files from my work laptop that I was using also as my personal laptop. Since the work laptop belongs to the school district the name that got transferred was "it" for the IT department. I went through the steps of creating a new user ID, enabling the root user, logging off and logging into the other adinistrator log on, changing the "it" user folder to my name but when I go back to my actual administrator account and look at the home icon in the user folder and it still says "it" and not my name. What else can I do? I also tried pressing control when I clicked on my name in Users in the System Preferences but it didn't change the home icon. Anyone have any other ways?
