explain exactly what you did

It sounds like you imported an iPhoto library into an iPhoto library - NEVER import one iPhoto library into another one - it does not work and creates massive duplication

If that is what you did drag the bad library to the desktop and Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for your reply! I had the old library on a Lacie backup hard drive. It was working fine until I upgraded from iphoto 9 to iphoto 11. I do seem to have more then one backup there but they are not labeled the same. i.e iphoto 2004 to 2008 library, the first one I double clicked on to open and and had massive duplication, iphoto2008 library and iphoto 2009 library.I am unsure of what might be on there in pure form now.

When I ues my iphoto 9-11 library it works fine.

When I moved to a new computer...twice in the last 5 years, I used the fire wire from one to the other and most recently the computer 's own program for moving and the Lacie was not moved onto the computer.

Thanks, September44

Depress the option key and launch iPhoto - use the select library option - it will give you a list of the valid iPhoto libraries it sees - test each one

Upgrading iPhoto or moving to a new computer does not create duplication (it does convert the structure but not the content of the library) - the most common cause and yours sounds like, is that one library has been imported into a new library sometime in the past - when this is done you get two or three versions of each photo (the original full photo, a thumbnail and if any modificationshave been made a large modified version)

You may find

Duplicate Annihalitor - http://brattoo.com/propaganda/ - or Decloner - http://www.pixelespressoapps.com/decloner/

I tried this but not sure where to find the library option, the pop up showed a picture of iPhoto application 730.2 mb version 9.4.2

Some of the rolls have up to 14 duplicates… are the programs you recommended better then Photo Sweeper?

Thanks again for your assistance:-)

I was looking in one I labeled iphoto Library 9 and found an uncontaminated I photo 2006. I was going to throw away some things that looked exterianious file with 2000 written on it... it changed the look of everything else in the file. I replased it but the changed look stayed and I am hesitant to close the library in case I never can get to it again.... much easier if you could see it I know.

I don't remember importing one into another library… I clicked on the iPhoto Duplication Cleaner… unfortunately I got the error message 404… file not found. :-(

I did download Photo Sweeper last week and worked with it for several hours… not any more helpful then going into iPhoto and deleting groups at a time. there are up to 14 duplicate of some photos and only low resolution versions of some.

I have a very nice Canon file camera but haven't used it in years. I hesitate on getting rid of it because I couldn't get much for it. I keep it for senitimental reasons and as a keepsake. Maybe some day one of my grandkids could try using it or sell it as an antique. Who knows. However, if your Nikon has lenses that could be used on a Nikon digital SLR I'd sure keep the lenses in case you every go that route.
