Uneven Back lighting and yellow tint on 21.5 iMac 2012

Just got my brand new iMac this morning. Unfortunately, my iMac got pretty serious issues.

I would imagine the new display in 2012 iMacs is different since its bonded to the glass, I would think the OP should return it since its new, my 2011 iMac does not have this issue but it was always pot luck if it happened, you would have hoped it would be better in the new iMacs for this year though, hopefully this is an isolated case. Personally I would wait a while to see what they are like, but if you need a new iMac then you don't really have a choice.

The new 2012 iMac's use the SAME DISPLAY as the previous iMac models did. It's the LG "LM215WF3" display, same as those in the 2009-2011 iMac displays. The only difference in the 2012 display, is that they took out the small space between the outer glass and the actual screen surface.

I was just over at the local Apple store loking at the new 21.5" iMac, and to be honest, I wasn't all that impressed. I have been waiting for over a year to upgrade my Mac, and had high expectations for the new 2012 iMac's .... but seeing and playing with one in the store .... the new one's may not be for me.

Most of all I wanted to believe all the talk about 75% less reflections in the new iMac display, but while in the Apple store, I saw no real difference over the previous model ... and if so, it was more like 25% less reflections. Nothing that dramatic, certainly not like the "anti-glare" screens available in the 2011 MacBook Pro.

The other disappointment was the extremely poor audio sound from the new iMac's built-in speakers. They just sounded so "tinny", even when playing with multiple iTunes "equalizer" settings. Again, disappointing.

Looks like I'll have to research the possibility of buying a Mini-Mac and an older Apple 20" cinema display off eBay. Or pick up a late model 2011 iMac and get the Rad-Tech "anti-glare" screen film for the display (Ugh!).

Being a graphic designer and art director in profession, I just can't understand why Apple has abandoned the "professional" market for these glossy displays in it's iMac line .... or at least STILL hasn't given us an option for a true "anti-glare" display.

Is it just me, or are my observations on the new 2012 iMac the same for others as well?

I stand corrected, and I did read it was the same display just bonded on the 21.5 ifixit tear down, personaly I am happy with my 2011 model, at least I can reach my SD card easily and as I'm in a wheelchair that's important, and I still use an optical drive (call me old fashioned but many friends do too) Personally if I was in the market for a new iMac I would wait to see what comes next year in the new Mac pro's or pick up a refurb 2011 iMac. Apple have cut down on cost and made the user pay for it as far as I can see, great business if you can make it sell, and they have. People say who ever upgrades ram, but ram goes wrong, and a glued together 21.5" iMac is going to be a nightmare if that happens 😟

Killhippie: Sticking with the previous iMac generation sounds like a good move. I too read the new iMac fixit teardown. Those new iMac 2012 internal speakers were pathetic looking, and in the store they sounded that way too!

I was really excited about the new iMac until I went and saw it in the Apple Store recently. Now, I'm not sure if it's just time for me to start looking for an Apple display alternative because Apple has decided to once again, not provide a truly "anti-glare" display (or as an option), for the iMac. This, after thousands and thousands of iMac users have been requesting Apple to do so for the past four years or so.

I'm finally getting that Apple has given up on the professional graphics community, and has become a consumer products company (like GE) ... I get it .... it's just a shame, because we were the ones (the professional creative community), who supported Apple in those years when it was about to go under (late 80's - mid 90's)!
