How to downgrade from iTunes 11 to 10.7 (Until the next iTunes 11.xxx release)

SO... This is a Repost of a Different thread that I started at 12:39pm Seattle, Wa time... (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4558052?answerId=20450510022#20450510022) Below is My straight to the point responce to the new iTunes 11 Release, It seemed to unstable to me. (Before downgrading please check out this users posts: (https://discussions.apple.com/profile/mjcm_nl?view=overview) Just to make sure that downgrading is the correct choice. Alot of the information there was not available when I started having problems...

=======================================================

ANYWAYS,

=======================================================

How I successfully ended up going back to 10.7 (following is the process I used to do it, as well as the references I used)

WARNING: By attempting to follow the procedures that I used... you acknowledge that if there are any purchases lost during the downgrade you take sole responsibility... I took the risk because I have my music on CD's, I regularly backup my apps to CD... and if I lose anything I will replace it myself (even if I have to repurchase it)

-It took a while, but it worked out...

1. I downloaded the iTunes 10.7 installer (iTunes 64bit: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1577).

[ iTunes 10.7 32bit: (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1576) ]

2. I uninstalled iTunes 11 and restarted my computer.

3. I installed iTunes 10.7 (when installed I was unable to run because the "iTunes Library.itl" file in my computer was from the iTunes 11 program) I did a file search for "iTunes Library.itl" and opened the file location (my file was located in: C:/Users/Spencer/Music/iTunes)

-[Note: Community thread that gave me the info I needed to resolve the "iTunes Library.itl" error: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4557592?answerId=20447382022#20447382022]

4. I "right clicked" on the folder Named "Previous iTunes Libraries" and opened in new window.

5. I located the most current file (prior to the 11 upgrade) and drag and dropped it into the location of the "current" .itl file renamed it to "iTunes Library.itl" and replaced the one that iTunes 11 created. (if you DO NOT delete/replace the .itl file that 11 created with a 10.7 version, iTunes will not open. IF done RIGHT your iTunes should open and you'll immediately see your playlists where they belong)

-If done right, it should be sucessfully rolled back to before the upgrade.

In step (5) where I said "IF done RIGHT your iTunes should open" I meant, "If done RIGHT,you can now open iTunes"... and see your playlists where they belong. 🙂 (iTunes will not open on its own 😁 )

@ pm22,

It seems that There is a SC folder that saves you authorization info, I would think that maybe that info was changed by iTunes 11... If when you try the downgrade, you have that issue again... the article I referenced, suggests to delete you "SC" info, then reauthorize you computer for your iTunes account... That's all I can assume (However Im not totally sure what all you SC info curtails.

If it where me, Since iTunes 11 Did not work on my computer at all (aka kept becoming "non responsive")... I would follow the step to delete the SC info (However... I would make a copy of the info somewhere just incase deleting it did not work. That way I can restore the file if needed).

AGAIN: I refer to my "WARNING" if you do decide to attempt to make changes to your computer whenever it involves adding/changing/deleting any files (especially Hidden Files such as the SC info), you take full responsability for any outcome as the result.

----->Maybe someone on the forums might know a little bit more about this issue :/ (That is... if the article about deleting the SC info does not resolve it). At this point though, once you reauthorize your computer... You might have to redownload your purchases again... I'm not sure though (uncharted territory here, especially since i did not have that issue 😟 )

-but as soon as a stable version of iTunes 11 comes around, I may just go back (or I might wait for iTunes 12 🙂 )

Thanks again Spencer. I must add that I om a mac platform, not Windows, so don't know what is the equivalent of SC in OSX. Anyway, I tried the downgrade again yesterday, and nope - same problem. This time, even before I connect the iphone I get error -42408. As soon as I start up the downgraded itunes 10.7, this itunes store error pops up. I immediately restored my itunes 11 and the error stopped. Guess I'll just wait for the next update of itunes and hope Apple fixes the issues.

--->I went back to the same weblink: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1389 for the apple iTunes advanced Troubleshooting, and fount the following infor for MAC-OS involving the SC folder. I do not have a MAC, but it seems simple enough... Good luck! 🙂

Remove the SC Info folder

If you are still unable to authorize your computer to play your purchases, you may be able to resolve your issue by removing the "SC Info" folder. To do so, follow these steps:

Mac OS X

  1. Quit iTunes and any other open applications until only Finder is open.
  2. Choose Go > Go to Folder.
  3. Type /Users/Shared/SC Info and click Go. User uploaded file

!!!WARNING!!! THIS IS A MAC OPERATING SYSTEM PROCESS... DO NOT DO ON A PC!!!!

  1. If Finder is not already set to column view, set it by choosing View > as Columns. User uploaded file
  2. Select the SC Info folder and move it to the Trash by choosing File > Move to Trash

    !!!WARNING!!! THIS IS A MAC OPERATING SYSTEM PROCESS... DO NOT DO ON A PC!!!!
  3. Restart the computer and open iTunes.
  4. Authorize your computer to play your purchases. Note: If you have multiple accounts you will need to authorize your computer for each account. For more information on how to authorize your computer, see this article.

Thanks a lot Spencer. I did not find this support article earlier. However, on my mac there is no such folder in the location specified. In fact I did a search of the whole disk and did not find a folder with this name. Also, Apple email support replied and basically ignored my real issue. Their reply is that i should upgrade to the latest version of itunes - duh ! Anyway I've decided to just live with itunes 11 and hope the next update fixes most of the annoying issues in the current version. Thanks to Spencer and everyone on this thread for your help.

Thank you very much for this. I just completed it on Windows 7 x64 and it worked perfectly. I hate to say it but Apple, since Steve Jobs passed, has their heads up their ******. I don't know who thought it would be a good idea to remove the artist grid view from Itunes but it was a bad enough decision that I hunted down a way to revert. I won't be upgrading until they return that function. Apple needs to pull their head out, just because they have a new boss doesn't mean they get to do stupid things. The most recent upgrads to iOS, iTunes and other things have been miserable and of Microsoft quality. Apple keeps this up and I might have to find other places to spend my money.

Sorry all, I'm no longer going to be able to respond to any more questions here... 😟 The downgrade worked perfectly well for me, and possible a couple thousand others. and Hopefully many more to come.

If the Downgrade did not work for you, then I would either:

1. Research the issue on this community for your specific issue.

~or~

2. Go back to iTunes 11.

going back will both correct some issues, as well as allow you to get help from apple [as their first solution will be to upgrade to the latest software].

----->For me I will stick to 10.7 for now, and see what they decide to do with their products in the future. I currently have an iPhone 4s, and over 36k songs, and was about to purchase an iPad !! But now with the current CEO over at apple making the changes they are doing... I an holding back future purchased until further notice.

anyway's... Good luck in your endeavors!

Thank you for this post. Took me about 10 minutes after I found this post, and I was up and running with a downgrade back to iTunes 10.7 with an added music library backup put back in iTunes. I did not seem to have any issues with an iPod classic which had been synch with iTunes 11.0 previously, I was able to synch back to iTunes 10.7 without any apparent problems. Much appreciated after having spent most of the day fussing over the new iTunes 11.0 I hope they decide to scrap it and based the new version more on the layout of version 10.0. Seems like they tried to invent square tires or something.

Best way to revert back is : save your music to a new file, not in the itunes file. uninstall itunes 11, delete all itunes librarys, install itunes 10.7 then add music from new file to your new itunes 10.7.

Every time I try to copy my playlist/music it only copies 19 songs. What is the best way to do this and get all of them? I am not a computer tekki so please make it as simple and detailed as possible. We are deploying soon so I really need to get this fixed ASAP! Thanks.

1st, I know I said that I would not reply anymore, but I couldn't help it... due to somthing another user posted (User: "Itunes7" to be exact!!!) I DO NOT RECOMEND saving your music to another file... yada, yada, what have you...

I ONLY RECOMEND reverting in the way I outlined at the BEGINNING of this post (Page 1), Please go to the original post and follow those directions....

HERE:

--->https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4559563?start=0&tstart=0<---
==============================================================

Now, That said... Itunes 11 sufferer, I have a couple questions...

1. Are all your music, apps, and purchased items still where they were b4 your attempt to downgrade? (aka if you copied them to a different file, are the "originals" still intact in their original location on your PC?

2. when you go to:

"C:/Users/Spencer/Music/iTunes" (sub "Spencer" for your User name)

...Do you see a folder that says "Previous iTunes Libraries"?

3. When You Open the "Previous iTunes Libraries" Folder, do you see a list of files with dates? How many do you see? (They look like "iTunes Library yyyy-dd-mm")

<<<What your looking for is a library file that has been dated to before you did the upgrade>>>

===============================================================================

--->If the answer to the first 2 Q's are YES...AND you still have the Library File dated to before your upgrade then You will be able to successfully revert via my directions at the beginning of this thread:
--->HERE: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4559563?start=0&tstart=0,

But I do recommend having a friend that is a little more "computer tekki" do the downgrade for you. (as per my warning at the beginning of my post)

If the answer is No, to any of those questions then I (or my directions) cannot help. 😟

When I try to open Itunes i get a window that comes up. It is as folows; The file "i TunesLibrary.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes. If there is a way to completely take Itunes off my lap top, I will just use my Nano5 and put what is on it to my computer. That seems to be the easiest way out for me. that is how I ended up here. I went to my control panel and deleted Itunes and then installed the 10.7 listed up top and when I tried to open it I get the message at the beginning of this post.

Okay that is actually good news, If that is all you did then do the following: (This is an updated repost from Page 2 of this thread)

First I want to reiterate my WARNING:

By attempting to follow the procedures that I used... you acknowledge that if there are any purchases lost during the downgrade you take sole responsibility... I took the risk because I have my music on CD's, I regularly backup my apps to CD... and if I lose anything I will replace it myself (even if I have to repurchase it)

===============================================================================

When your trying to restore your previous Library w/Playlists, You will Need to: (Or your getting the error listed above)

1."Delete" the "iTunes Library.itl" In your Library Folder.
--->(Located: C:/Users/**user name**/My Music/iTunes)

2. Go to the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder
--->(Located: in the iTunes folder mentioned above)

3. In your instance you will "Right-click" the File named "itunes Library yyyy-mm-dd.itl" and Select "COPY" (This will basicaly be the file that is dated to just before your upgrade)

***Leaving everything else alone...***

4. Go back to the iTunes Folder

--->(where you deleted the "iTunes Library.itl" file)

5. In the iTunes folder, "Right -Click" in on an empty spot and select "Paste"

6. Now there should now be a new file in the iTunes folder named "itunes Library yyyy-mm-dd.itl"

7. All you need to do now is to rename that file (That you just "Pasted")
------>From: "iTunes Library 2012-10-18.itl"

------>To: "iTunes Library.itl"

(Basically just deleting the Date)

==============================================================================

Again I would only reccomend someone that feels confortable with following these dirrections to actually perform them... in your words "computer tekki" 🙂

Hope this helps 😉
