How to downgrade from iTunes 11 to 10.7 (Until the next iTunes 11.xxx release)

SO... This is a Repost of a Different thread that I started at 12:39pm Seattle, Wa time... (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4558052?answerId=20450510022#20450510022) Below is My straight to the point responce to the new iTunes 11 Release, It seemed to unstable to me. (Before downgrading please check out this users posts: (https://discussions.apple.com/profile/mjcm_nl?view=overview) Just to make sure that downgrading is the correct choice. Alot of the information there was not available when I started having problems...

=======================================================

ANYWAYS,

=======================================================

How I successfully ended up going back to 10.7 (following is the process I used to do it, as well as the references I used)

WARNING: By attempting to follow the procedures that I used... you acknowledge that if there are any purchases lost during the downgrade you take sole responsibility... I took the risk because I have my music on CD's, I regularly backup my apps to CD... and if I lose anything I will replace it myself (even if I have to repurchase it)

-It took a while, but it worked out...

1. I downloaded the iTunes 10.7 installer (iTunes 64bit: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1577).

[ iTunes 10.7 32bit: (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1576) ]

2. I uninstalled iTunes 11 and restarted my computer.

3. I installed iTunes 10.7 (when installed I was unable to run because the "iTunes Library.itl" file in my computer was from the iTunes 11 program) I did a file search for "iTunes Library.itl" and opened the file location (my file was located in: C:/Users/Spencer/Music/iTunes)

-[Note: Community thread that gave me the info I needed to resolve the "iTunes Library.itl" error: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4557592?answerId=20447382022#20447382022]

4. I "right clicked" on the folder Named "Previous iTunes Libraries" and opened in new window.

5. I located the most current file (prior to the 11 upgrade) and drag and dropped it into the location of the "current" .itl file renamed it to "iTunes Library.itl" and replaced the one that iTunes 11 created. (if you DO NOT delete/replace the .itl file that 11 created with a 10.7 version, iTunes will not open. IF done RIGHT your iTunes should open and you'll immediately see your playlists where they belong)

-If done right, it should be sucessfully rolled back to before the upgrade.

In step (5) where I said "IF done RIGHT your iTunes should open" I meant, "If done RIGHT,you can now open iTunes"... and see your playlists where they belong. 🙂 (iTunes will not open on its own 😁 )

Sorry, I'm not familiar with Mac's 😟

I would hope that you could find the answerer here: ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4590177 )

It looks like on that thread, there is a little better direction as to moving forward with the process... Good Luck! 🙂

Also Huge Thanks to: turingtest2 for aiding people when I am not active in the community! 🙂

UPDATE!

...I wanted to Add, My Nephew's iTunes upgraded and he had used his iTunes 11 for a while, purchased music and apps and like a lot of people looking at this thread he did not like the new iTunes.

While I was out there I followed my process for the downgrade, then this process ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451) to import his iTunes 11 Library to his iTunes 10.7 *.itl file.

(I added the link that was shared by: polydorus Thank you)

The link ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451) describes how to create/recreate a replacement "iTunes Library.itl" file from your "iTunes Library.xml" file via the "import playlist" in iTunes... It is a little tricky so I reccomend reading through that post before attempting! (I advise backing up your iTunes Library files *ALL of the files...I failed to successfully retain his iTunes 11 info at least 3 times) so PLEASE READ AND UNDERSTAND MY WARNING!!!

WARNING: By attempting to follow the procedures that I used... you acknowledge that if there are any purchases lost during the downgrade you take sole responsibility... Thank you

Sorry, but I cannot answer any questions. I don't know how the above process works, but it did. If anyone has a link for a clear process, please post it below.

Again, Thank You

.

For anyone looking to downgrade now that iTunes is on version 11.xxx or newer, I would hope that this process still works (post 9-2-2013), but I still hold fast to my original disclaimer! (Try at your own risk)

Additionally I added an update for those with purchases, apps and playlists since the upgrade to 11.xxx, I posted a link to a process to "import" your old files form a "*.xml" file instead of replacing the "*.itl" file. (Link on page-5 of the post, if it didn't come through in the quote)... I followed that process with my nephews Computer and It worked just fine (retaining all the information from post upgrade purchases - into iTunes 10.7).

But again, I have to say... you can see the date when I posted that update, If someone successfully does the downgrade, please post here to let others know that the new process works good still!! (the process to use the .xml file to retain information from post upgrade, and transfer it into the older version of iTunes 10.7)

Thank you to everyone that has viewed this thread

Yep - took me a little bit to get around to hitting this stone wall hard and I'm LIVID that Apple (or anyone) would be force feeding cloud based services down our throats.

Brand new iPhone 5S - and in setting it up can not locate an info tab?!!! Discover Mavericks FORCES cloud synch? !!! Not acceptable and this 'undocumented feature' was never part of the demo's, the kick off, or literature for Mavericks or iTunes.

Best hope right now is to downgrade iTunes so I can get back Info synching and the old radio (as radio service now stinks... much prefer the older radio styles).

With such a heavy handed force I'm starting to consider my loyalty to Apple products and Apple as a company. I've used Apples since the Apple // days, and one of the reasons is because it was open. iOS is a walled garden (dealing w/it) but will NOT get bullied into using cloud services.... no way.

Successfully downgraded from iTunes 11 back to 10.7 - all looking good.. BUT....

Plugging in the 5S now states
"The iPhone “name” cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 11.1 or later. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes."

This isn't looking good.....

The iPhone 4 pops right up in iTunes 10.7, as expected (and as wanted). Anyone know if there would be a way to spoof iTunes to reading the 5S or the 5S telling iTunes it is an older model?

Jan 23, 2014 12:36 PM in response to PixelRogue

Cannot be done. You cannot downgrade the firmware on the device, and it won't talk to anything less than iTunes 11.1.

In case you haven't run into my thoughts on this yet....

The main differences between iTunes 11 and earlier versions are the loss of coverflow and ability to have multiple windows open.

In Windows, you can restore much of the look & feel of iTunes 10.7 with these shortcuts:

  • ALT to temporarily display the menu bar
  • CTRL+B to show or hide the menu bar
  • CTRL+S to show or hide the sidebar
  • CTRL+/ to show or hide the status bar (won't hide for me on Win XP)
  • Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library to restore the old search behaviour
  • Use View > Hide <Media Kind> in the cloud or Edit > Preferences > Store and untick Show iTunes in the cloud purchases to hide the cloud items. The second method eliminates the cloud status column (and may let iTunes start up more quickly)
  • If you don't like having different coloured background & text in the Album (Grid) view use Edit > Preferences > General and untick Use custom colours for open albums, movies, etc.
  • With iTunes 11.0.3 and later you can enable artwork in the Songs view from View > Show View Options (CTRL+J) making it more like the old Album List view
  • View > Show View Options (CTRL+J) also contains options to change the sorting of grid based views

On a Mac. For me, the main kicker was the loss of the info tab which I only noticed now as I am setting up the new phone. Though I miss Internet Radio, there are substitutes so I just wrote off using iTunes for internet music (not into the create your own station music).

But now 100% hosed. Choices are either A) Give up Mavericks and go back to Mountain Lion, B) Give up the iPhone 5S - go back to an older model, or C) manually enter the data and never have the information synched.

One support tech stated Apple made the decision to improve the adoption of the cloud services. One thing to hide the functionality a bit for those who really need it - a complete other mess to just rip it away.

Anyone know of a 3rd party tool that will synch? Back in the day there used to be a few tools to synch smart phones w/Macs...that might be a workaround... and then likely kick iTunes to the curb 100%. No value anymore.
