Will Dell Monitor 2001FP work with late 2009 Mac Mini?

I recently bought a late 2009 Mac Mini which I tested thoroughly with the seller's equipment and it worked perfectly. (He was keeping his monitor.) I tried it at home with two different monitors: a Dell Monitor 2001FP (which has both DVI-D and VGA inputs), which is the one I hope to use; and an old Sony VGA CRT monitor, which I presently use with a G5 Mac. Neither was able to communicate with the Mini.

I started with the original adapter that came with the Mini with its DVI-D dual link input. To this I connected the cable I use for the G5 (VGA --> VGA), adding a DVI-D --> VGA adapter and using the VGA input on the monitor, and nothing happened. I know the monitor works properly from its opening screen when turning it on. Then I tried a DVI-D --> VGA cable, the DVI-D end plugged directly into the Mac Mini adapter and the VGA end into the monitor. Still nothing happened. And finally, I tried the latter cable with a VGA --> DVI-D adapter into the DVI-D port on the monitor, and still no results.

Finally (whew!), my question is: Will this Dell monitor work with late 2009 Mac Mini, and if so, EXACTLY what cable or adapters do I need? Could it be as simple as a DVI-D --> DVI-D cable? Or a Mac Mini --> DVI-D cable, that is, not using the Apple-supplied adapter? Or is it simply not compatible?...

Many thanks!

Is it possible--or maybe I should ask if such a thing exists--to get a single cable with mini DVI on one end and DVI-D on the other end?

No

Wouldn't that lessen the chance of something going wrong between computer and monitor?

One would think so, only problem is that Apple put in a display output port that requires a Mini DVI adapter.

I can now connect the two with a cable and SEVERAL adapters but get no communication between the two....

You should not need several adapters, perhaps that is your problem.

If your Mac Mini is a 2009 as you stated in your original question, then you only need the Mini DVI to DVI Adapter that came with the Mac Mini (or this one from Apple) and a DVI-D cable.

I wondered about the multiple adapters.... I thought I had seen cables that have the mini connector on one end and a DVI-D on the other, but I'm not really familiar with this stuff, so I guess I was wrong. I DO have the original Apple mini --> DVI-D adapter that came with the Mini. I'll order a DVI-D male --> DVI-D male cable ... and let's see what happens. Many thanks for your suggestions!
