I can't log into my iMac desktop - it keeps telling me my password is wrong!

Two days ago out of nowhere my iMac starts telling me that my login password is wrong and I cannot get into my desktop without changing it with my Apple ID. I canged the password and tried to log in again - it tells me that the password is wrong but lets me get into my desktop anyway. When I get in various windows pop-up wanting my login-keychain, which I type in and what do you know - It says it's incorrect! I don't know what else to do, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

If that doesn't help, try making a new admin user to get in...

Starts up like the first time you buy a new Mac, but after filling in all that info again, you should have access to the computer and the other Users & files will still be there... give the new User a different name than an existing one.
