iTunes 11 airplay stops in middle of songs, why?

We have iTunes 11 on a MacBook Air with Lion (10.7.5, all current updates). Occasionally, in the middle of a song playing over Airplay, iTunes stops streaming the song. As best we can tell it appears to be random. If we go back to a song that it previously stopped on, but it doesn't stop again. Thought it may be Energy Savings settings, but it's set for 3 hours before sleeping, and 2 hours to turn off screen. Now "Put the had disk to sleep..." is set, and perhaps this is it. But according to my wife, this never happened under iTunes 10.x, it has just started with iTunes 11.

I'll try the "hard disk sleep" setting and report back, but any other ideas?

So, I tried turning off "hard disk sleep when not in use...", but that didn't work. I also tried restarting, repairing permissions, and one other thing where I directly connect to my Airport Express (instead of connecting from my Airport Extreme which then connects to my Airport Express). Same thing no matter what.

Seems to be iTunes 11 as best I can tell. Still not sure how to fix.

Your comments are welcome.

I've got the same thing happening. started with itunes 11. never had trouble before.

running a 2010 mac mini and latest ATV2. Everything is on wired network that's been flawless for years.

Has anyone tried to Airplay a Movie or TV show and see if it drops/stops too?

I'm going to try that next.

After that I'm going to reset the ATV2. I've already rebooted the mini, no avail.

everything's pointing to itunes 11 right now.

I have the Same, after 45-60 minutes playing music or seeing movies from my library, the music stops and the screen of my iMax is after putting my password, black. I have the sleeping time of the harddisc changed frommel 10 min to 3 hours, and have no problemen after doing Thatcher. It seems Thatcher iTunes 11 has influinces on the werking of the harddisc. Apple has to look after this point.

I am having similar issues, which began after iTunes 11.

I have a MacBook Pro and two Apple TV's and one AirPlay speaker (all on WiFi). All with the latested software/updates. Everything worked perfectly with iTunes 10.7, but since upgrading, music will randomly stop playing. There is no rhyme or reason, and it occurs when streaming to any and all of the devices.

Likewise, when I watch a movie on my AppleTV (streaming from my iTunes library on my MBP), the same things happens. At least once during the movie the stream will completely stop and AppleTV will go back to the main menu.

Once again, this all started happening with iTunes 11. I have trying resetting all the devices and rebooting the computer and the issue still occurs. Any other solutions people have tried? This is definitely a bug that Apple should be made aware of.

Addendum to my previous post: My iMac (late 2007) does not have the problem we're discussing here. Only on my MacBook Pro (mid 2012) will the music stop streaming from iTunes 11 via AirPlay through an Apple 3 TV, after approx 30 - 45 minutes. All settings in both iTunes and System Prefs. (Desktop & Screen Saver and Energy Saver) are identical.

I am having the same problem, with a similar model of iMac (early 2007). I play my music through my sound system using my Apple TV 2 and airplay. It has worked perfectly until I updated the Apple TV, Mountain Lion, and thus, iTunes, on Nov. 30th. Now, the music just stops after 30-45 minutes, in mid-song, just as Fox8 described. So far, I have: rebooted the computer, reset the Apple TV to factory settings, rebooted the Apple Extreme router, restored the computer to 2:00am on Nov. 30th (itunes would not run at all, saying that the music library was created with a newer version), re-updated Mountain Lion and itunes... everything I can think of. Still, the music stops. I have eliminated the Apple TV (streams Netflix and iphoto just fine), and the router (ditto) The only thing that leaves is either a Mountain Lion problem or an itunes problem. I hope Apple gets this resolved; if anyone has found a solution, please post it here.

I am going to try to stream via Airport Express and see if that works, using an iDevice as a remote. Apple delayed the release of itunes 11 so it would be right, but it appears it's not quite there. We need a 11.01 patch. Quickly, please. Or at least a way to downgrade to the version that did indeed "just work."

So here is what we have learned so far:

1) There is a common thread here, all have upgraded to iTunes 11

2) It has occured with Airplay over AppleTV and Airport Express

3) This has occured on several different hardware platforms of Macs

4) It sounds like the OS has been anything from at least Snow Leopard (10.6.x) thru Mountain Lion (10.8.x)

5) No one has found a fix yet. Usual things such as restarting, rebooting the ATV or AEx, updating all software/firmware, repairing permissions, etc. doesn't help.

6) APPLE, if you are reading this, please escalate this to your software engineers, as cullumjt mentioned, to release an update to fix this issue.

If anyone does find a fix, please post it on this thread!

Thanks all and Apple!

It's confirmed (at least in my test) that iTunes 11 is the culprit. I ran a full library shuffle (11,000+ songs) using my Apple TV and it stalled in about an hour. I ran the same shuffle running it through my Airport Express and it also stopped playing in the middle of a song in about the same time. Has anyone tried iTunes Match? Presumably it would work, but who knows. I would be willing to shell out the $25 if it were more reliable.

same issue here. very angry. the entire point of iTunes is to play music, this update broke that!!!

iTunes 11 on Windows 7

Playing music to either of 2 Apple TV's using Airplay music just stops. between 2 to 10 songs. iTunes shows status bar continuing as if music is still playing. stop and start in iTunes re-starts feed.

Airplay to old Airport Express, same as above but has never passed 3 songs. ever.

and worst of all, playing music on the AppleTV (from AppleTV menu) also stops after 2 to 10 songs. on both AppleTV's. ***

In 3 days I have not been able to finish a single album.

not being able to play music from iTune is not a small bug. this is BROKEN.

Pretty disappointed about this. Does anyone use an itunes-like app? I am on a 2007 iMac, Mountain Lion. I am going to do some research to see if there is player out there that works. I used to listen to music every day, and I would like to again. I will report back. Mine works exactly as darkangel22 describer, except it goes for an hour or so. Restarting the music that has seemingly paused does indeed work. Come on, Apple, every stick of stuff in my system is yours and it should work in concert.
