Just add the Windows Live account to Mail, or browse to it in Safari, either way works.
did that. i still get messages asking for my password. i also cant see my subfolders like Gmail, etc. this is a new problem since i received my new iMac.
Check your settings, did you choose POP or Imap access?
What I believe happened is that the default for live is pop3 hence u only see inbox out box on the msn side

I agree, but we need the OP to confirm how it is setup.
i tried POP3; no joy. i currently have IMAP4 setup and its sends but doesnt receive. i understand the need to ensure your competition's software doesnt work exactly trouble free but this email bs between apple and microsoft if childish.

The simple way is to locate the correct settings and enter them, this means all settings, security, servers, authentification etc for both Imap and SMTP sections.
Do you have these?
Some searching with Google suggests that Windows Live and Windows Live Hotmail do not support Imap access, only POP, HTTP or Active Sync, if this is correct you will only be able to set it up as POP3, so you won't see your folders (unlike Gmail)
Also Live and Hotmail accounts are transforming into Outlook accounts (@outlook.com) so servers may be wierd at the moment.
Set it up as POP
i have all the required information. its not working like i want it too - thats the problem. i upgraded from hotmail to Outlook some time ago. assumed things would be more fluid. main concern is security which why i will be migrating to a email/wed hosting setup next week.
thanks for input.
Outlook.com does not support Imap, you can't synchronize folders.
wolfrus,
i beleive that everyone was under the perspecitve that you wanted to have your hotmail/outlook account on the msn side work on mail. that can only be done in pop3 format
http://www.macosxtips.co.uk/index_files/windows-live-hotmail-in-mail-app.php
however you will only see the basic folders inbox, sent, trash......because of pop3 as its referred to.
as for the live to outlook account coversion on the msn side - i have done that as well and I am pleasently supprised of the webmaill interface.
to answer your question, if you follow the simple steps you can receive and send emails from your account
but you will not see all of the sub-folders because it is not imap.
As for exchange, exchange will work differently based on your organization.
