How to transfer playlists to iPhone with new iTunes

I just upgraded to the newest version of iTunes and I can't figure out how to transfer a playlist to my iPhone. I used to be able to see the device in the column (on the left) and then drag the songs into the device. Doesn't look so simple anymore.Tutorial was useless.

Found a Solution - I airdroped the media file to my wifes macbook air (running itunes 11.0.5) and on her laptop it will allow me to change media kind to audiobook and it appeared in her iTunes books/audio books section. The above comment about sidebard was nice to know, but I still could not change media kind (or move my recently imported from CD audiobooks to my iphone).

I am new to apple - absolutely love my Iphone! I was having problems getting my play lists on my phone too. Having the side bar helped - it shows the play list. All I had to do was drag it to the top of the phone part. When I tried to add it at the bottom - where I would have thought it went - it would not work. I tried it at the top and went right in! I am so happy!! Thank you all for the help! Being new to Apple and Itunes - I was not happy! Hope my bit helped!

Ok, so I had recently changed my iPhone4S sync settings so that I could manage my music manually. I was having a hard time figuring out how to transfer a new playlist to my iPhone and found this thread while doing a search. None of the replies really seemed to directly address how to transfer a playlist to an iPhone through iTunes. Fumbling through it for a while longer I was able to figure it out, here is my step by step:

With your iPhone connected to your PC and iTunes open

*Click the iPhone button near the upper right corner of iTunes

*The last option on your iPhone menu will be "On This iPhone", Click this

*This should change the lower portion of your iTunes to look like a library showing your your iPhone contents. The upper right of this area has a button that says "Add To", Click this

*This should change the whole screen to show your library contents with a menu across the top, the library on the lower left and your iPhone on lower right. To add a playlist just click the "Playlists" menu option and then click and drag the the playlist to your iPhone section. This will also add any songs in the playlist not currently on your iPhone.

The same works for individual songs as well. From the "Songs" menu just click and drag from the library over to your iPhone (or select mutiple songs before dragging using "Shift" or "Ctrl").

When you're done, just click the blue "Done" button and apply your changes to your iPhone.

Hope this helps anyone else who finds this thread who is searching for more direct instructions.

So I've been reading a lot of these replies and NONE have been helpful. However, I found another workaround so I decided to share it, hopefully this solves it for someone else. Took me two hours to figure it out....

iTunes: 11.1.3.8

Device: iPhone 4, iOS 7.0.4

Problem: Recently Restored my iPhone. After updating iTunes and the iPhone, I could no longer drag and drop playlists onto the iPhone. I have the sidebar activated, but this somehow disables the "iPhone button" and "Add to" options listed above, couldn't find these ANYWHERE. Whenever I copied a playlist directly to the iPhone (drag and drop onto the iPhone logo under Devices) it would create a playlist, with all the songs 'waiting to copy'. iTunes would then proceed to do f*** all and never actually copy the files onto the device. When I did manage to copy a playlist (do not ask me how, I don't remember), the playlist didn't show up on the iPhone and I ended up adding all the songs (which did copy) to a playlist manually on the iPhone. It's a special **** reserved only for stubborn Apple users apparently....

Solution: The ONLY thing that has worked for me so far is the following. Create a new Playlist on the iPhone manually (this is again so counter-intuitive that I am surprised people even use this Apple crap at all). To do this select the iPhone under Devices and then go to the Menu Bar (activated by pressing Ctrl+B on a Windows PC). Select File->New->Playlist. This creates a blank Playlist on your iPhone. You can then drag and drop individual songs to this playlist. They are copied to the iPhone and when you open your Music app, lo and behold, it actually recognises the playlist! And it plays the songs! Glory hallelujah!

Of course, as stated above, you need to have your iPhone set up so you can Manually manage music and turn off all wi-fi syncing, iTunes Match and any other such crap, for this to work. You also need to have the Sidebar showing.

So it's not true drag and drop, but it's better than nothing. At least I can put music on my iPhone again.

Thanks Apple, for making ubiquitous products which are impossible to use without a degree in Astrophysics!

Hope this helps someone
