iTunes 11, no iTunes DJ or Cover Flow.

Hi,

My 2 favorite iTunes features are now gone in iTunes 11. I used iTunes DJ and Cover Flow almost every second iTunes was running, both together.

Cover Flow was the reason I went and found all the album covers to my underground music (replacing all the auto generated covers with the real ones).

To me, Cover Flow was the next best thing to actually holding the album in my hands, which is a ritualistic luxury I've always anticipated since the 90s.

iTunes DJ was the reason I filled out all my track info, so I could easily create smart playlists on the fly.

It also gave meaning to rating my music, which I gave much thought to knowing it would affect the frequency of DJ play.

I spent most of a month polishing out my massive music collection and cataloging it all.

I was proud.

The reward:

- A remote controlled jukebox that played my favorite tracks more often, while being able to be manipulated on the fly.

- A visual representation of of the current album, and the upcoming albums.

It takes me back to the days of holding a stack of CDs and having to load them 1 at a time. I could visually see what other choices were up next.

- - -

I can't believe Apple took away the only 2 things I cared about, both at the same time.

It's like they didn't even do any research into what their most poplar features were before adding more crappy gimmicks.

I never used Genius (might be good in a decade, today, it's a bloat feature).

Never listened to the music suggestions (I have no problem discovering new music by my own means).

To me it's all pointing to what I do from time to time anyway --> use the iTunes Store.

They've somehow changed my simple jukebox into a money making machine, in 1 patch.

Wish I could revert to 10.7.

Until they add the iTunes DJ feature back, here is a *temporary* solution:

  1. Create a Smart Playlist
  2. Select 'Checked' from the first dropdown list and let the next one default to 'is true'
  3. Limit the list to whatever you choose. I opted for 10 hours of play
  4. Keep 'Live updating' checked and click the OK button
  5. Name your new playlist 'iTunes DJ'

Enjoy!

As for Cover Flow, I couldn't figure out a work around for that, sorry.

Yeah, well, I'm an Apple fan but Üp Next"doesn't quite replace iTunes DJ, it's Ok if you're the only one adding songs to the list, that's simpler the game with DJ was hosting a party at your house letting people adding songs from your library to their liking in the DJ list but retaining your power as HOST to skip or replace songs... I have two iphones for testing this feature, my HOME iphone and a Guest one... and the new remote gives the ability to the guest of jumping in front of all the list!!! Imagin a few dozen people doing that!! Not cool taking DJ out...

I did not use Cover flow that much, i mean it was cool but not that useful... my personal list were "smart" and Genre, Artist, Album and puntuation based... let's see if apple comes with some good "social music" listening...or something

Coverstream seems like a solution but only on macs.

But can this be linked with iTunes 11 ?

Should be noted it does have Last.FM support as well.

A few others are.

CoverSutra

Everplay

Steelskies

Run iTunes 10 in vm or sandboxed

By the way:

I was actually hoping for CF to be expanded. I never in my wildest dreams would have wanted it removed.

Things like adding the ability to have back covers with even more robust features and networking coverflow into the iPhone remote app so you can move your iTunes coverflow right from your iphone or iPod.

Apple. Lets expand and conquer. Then refine. Rinse repeat!

Just wanted to add one final note. Songbird combined with the mediaflow extension also looks like a good solution as well and is multi platform compatible. Not only that but it works on linux, it has selective sync and could probably be linked with iTunes audio control as well.

Most of the core code is also opensource.

I have always used iTunes, but after seeing how awful v11 was (after 2 days of pain, I ditched it and went back to V10) I decided it was time to check out other options as well. V10 is great and hopefully can do the job for a while yet, but Apple have clearly played their cards and I have little interest in their way forward. They are losing me fast as a customer.

Someone on here suggested Winamp - so I thought I would download it and try it out, and you know what, it is pretty good. Been testing it now for the past few days and it has a lot of upside, and unlike iTunes 11 it hasn't annoyed me at all to date - rather impressed to be honest.

Your mileage will vary, but if you are considering other options, might be worth a peep.

iTunes 11, no iTunes DJ or Cover Flow.
