This is really one lousy way to try to get a question answered! This field will not even let me type in the whole question. This *****!!!!

Well, this other page just came up. Perhaps I can type my whole question here.

I saved to my desktop a video in .mp4. When I try to open it I get a popup that says that it is a format that Quicktime play doesn't understand. When I click on the ''tell me more'' option in the popup a page opens up where the formats compatible with Quicktime in OS 10.6 or more are listed. Amongst those that are listed in .mp4. My OS is 10.6.8 so I should have not problem opening this up. So what do I need to do about this?

MacBook, iOS 6.0.1, my OS is really 10.6.8

Thanks for the response.

I already have VLC Media player 2.0.4 Intel 64bit. I opened it up and dragged the .mp4 into it and then clicked on the file and nothing happens at all.

When I click on the Quicktime icon on my desktop for this file I get a popup with this message:

''The document “hendershot_video_guide.mp4” could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands. You may need to install additional software to open this file.''

This popup gives me two options to click on:

1 Tell Me More; 2. OK.

When I click on ''Tell Me More'' I get a page that lists all the formats that Quicktime will play and amongst them is .mp4 video files. But what I do not get with this ''Tell Me More'' option is any information as to why Qucktime won't play this .mp4 file nor any information with respect to how I can fix this issue nor exactly what ''additional software'' I might get in order to ''open this file.''

So what good is a ''Tell Me More'' option if it doesn't actually tell you more about the issue that you are having? Why send such a useless popup?

I bought this file and it was sent to me in Google as a downloadable file. Although it will not open up as a downloaded file on my desktop, if I click on it while it is still in Google it will open up and start playing. So, my computer must be able to read it if it will play that way.

Quicktime is not working with it and neither is VLC 2.0.4. Do you have any other suggestions?

Thank you,

Peter
