how to purchase mainstage with 10.5.8

To use the Mac App Store to make this purchase you need to be running OS X 10.6.8

But you already know that...

Furthermore, if you did come across a DVD version of it or Logic Studio 2(which will run on 10.5.8), it would in all probability cost far more than the combined price of Mac OS X 10.6 and the Mac App Store version.

i just ran into the same problem, i have the latest version of snow leopard, but cannot download mainstage, so now i will have to upgrade to mountain lion .. but thats ok its better and if you think about it the upgrade and mainstage is still cheaper than most stuff out there

If you do indeed have the latest version of Snow Leopard (10.6.8) you should see the App Store icon in your dock. Launch it in order to purchase and download MainStage. There is no need to upgrade to Mountain Lion.

You'll love Snow Leopard. I was running 10.5.8 for a long time on my older iMac and was reluctant to update because of all my music DAWS and plugins, but I finally decided to chance upgrading to 10.6 and it worked out well.

After you install it and update it to 10.6.8 you will then have access to the App Store and will be able to purchase GarageBand '11 (version 6.0.5) for $14.99. There is no need to buy the whole iLife suite unless you want to.

so no need to install mountain lion? i think i might get it since its only 19 and more powerful

You need to really give it some thought before you upgrade your OS. Consider how old your computer is, what applications you run on it, how much RAM you have, etc. And do you really need to get the very latest OS?

You will hear some people say that they in the end regretted upgrading to a certain OS because the applications that they love to use no longer work as well, which is a major disappointment. They will end up re-installing their older OS. Others will be happy with the new OS. There are a LOT of variables that you need to consider.

My own personal opinion is that I do not like the direction Apple is taking with their OSX 10.8 so I'm sticking with 10.6.8 on my older music iMac and sticking with 10.7.5 on my newer video & graphics iMac. Mountain Lion is more like an iOS that you have on mobile devices. I personally don't want my desktop computer to look and act like a mobile device. That's what my iPad is for. 😉

so i havent used my macbook (2008) since 2011, it used to be partitioned with windows 7. however i had the genius bar do a factory reset on it and now it has the latest version of snow leopard, so there are really no other apps i ve been using. its primary function will now be for live performances. i wanna use whatever os will work the best with mainstage.

If I were you, I would start by maxing out my RAM. I believe your Macbook will take up to 6GB:

Then, I would purchase/download/install MainStage via the App Store on my Macbook running OSX 10.6.8 with 6GB of RAM. Next I would launch MainStage, set the I/O preferences, and start rockin'! If it works great, why do anything else?

If you have a lot of free HD space or have an external drive (preferable) you can then download all that additional content and have some more fun. Since it sounds like you streamlined your HD by eliminating the Windows partition (?) you should have a lean, mean machine. I found when I upgraded from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 that I actually gained about 20GB of HD space! Snow Leopard was an amazing improvement!
