Q: How to get email rules work also on iPhone/iPad

Hello there,

my name is Thommy. I have a question to use mail on the iPhone and iPad.

On my mac I can in the mail program under settings select email rules to have the email right away ruted into a mail box.

I can see the mail box also on my iPhone and iPad but the mails are only routed on my mac into the corresponding folder.

On the iPhone and iPad they just arrive in the mailbox inbox.

How can I also get the mails on my iPhone and iPad to go directly to the correct mail boxes?

Hope someone knows the trick or maybe this is not possible at all to do?

Thank you for your feedback in advance.

Thommy

Sorry, not possible on any iOS device. If you want any "rules" for mail, you must do this at the server level, as you cannot do so on your phone, and local rules, created on your computer, will not sync to your phone.

I have rules on my mac mail program that do not seem to hit through to my iPhone.

I have noticed since making these same rules through iCloud using mail with Safari that these rules do in fact now run through to my iPhone.

A hint in the right direction for you perhaps?

It's the same thing, you can choose to archive rather than delete.

    Hi Ricky,

    one more question...

so you do them both on your mac and in iCloud additionally for the iPhone?

    Do I understand this correct?

Or is it enough to do it only in iCloud and it will work both on my mac at home and on the iPhone?

    Thanks for your feedback.

Thommy, i am no expert but i think i would use safari to log in to mail with iCloud.

I would aim for setting a rule from within there, i would hope to be able to choose the folder of my choice.

If the folder is not there to choose then i would myself need to investigate a little further.

Remember Thommy some who are willing to help although very knowledgeable lack the forsight to speak plain english.

Wjosten. Your comments are appreciated by me also but local, server level etc etc, what are you talking about.

Any chance you could display your expertise in a manner that could be understood by a wider spectrum of forum users?

Server: Whoever is your mail provider, depending on type of mail account...IMAP, Exchange, or POP, you can create folders/rules on the provider's server(however, not possible with a POP account). These will sync across devices or computers, if an Exchange or IMAP account.

Local: Most desktop mail programs permit the creation of "mail rules". These are "local" rules(created on your computer) and are not synced to any device or the "Server".

iOS devices do not have the ability, like a desktop mail program, to create "rules" of any kind. Thus, you must do so at the "Server" level.

I am truly no expert as i said before but i am a belt and braces kind of person.

Yes i do both. It started on my mac but never hit through. Thats why i tested by setting a rule by way of safari and iCloud. It worked for me.

I suspect it is only needed to be done through safari to get the result i am getting.

But yes i have done both.

If you test it out and your findings are true, that you only need create the rule by way of Safari and iCloud, then to be as helpful as possible to the forum. Please post your finding here too.

Bucket loads of people see this stuff.

What you've done is created the rule at the "server" level...iCloud.
