Problem installing iTunes 11 on Windows 8

I am trying to install iTunes 11 on my Windows 8 PC, but the installation seems to be hanging. Task Manager shows that iTunesSetup.exe is running, using minimal system resources, but it never gets as far as displaying any windows/dialogs on screen. I already have iTunes 10.7 working on my PC - this was already present when I upgraded from Windows 7. The iTunes download page on the Apple website clearly states that Windows 8 is one of the supported versions.
