I'm not receiving text messages on my new iPhone. What am I doing wrong?

Nothing so far, other than to look for answers. I'm a newbie to this. I can successfully send messages, but I can't receive them, other than an initial message from my cell phone carrier confirming my plan with my new iPhone 4S.
In: Settings >> Message, turn off "Show Subject"
Assuming it's other iOS devices that your not receiving messages from based on the carriers message coming through go to Settings > Messages > Recieved At and check to see if you phone number is selected.

@Malignance: Thanks, but I checked and my phone number is indeed selected. And I'm not receiving messages from my wife's non-iOS devices as well.
