Thank you for this. Got my 10.7 back and running.

Thank you very much, for solving that horrible problem.  I'm back on 10.7 without losing any more time.

Why did they do iTunes 11? Where was the beta testing?

I gave it a full week of use to try to over come my resistance to change.  After that week I can say I do not believe it made any task easier and almost without exception made previously simple tasks needlessly more complicated.  Who signed off on this?

They say bad things come in 3s.  Maps and now iTunes, what will they f**k up next?

Thank you for sharing your expertise, but I now have a different question. I followed your instructions to the letter (as I thought) but when I opened iTunes 10.7 I was presented with a blank library.

I played around with the files for a bit but couldn't fix it, and in the end gave up and deleted the whole iTunes folder (I had backed up before starting this whole process). When I restored from backup according to the instructions elsewhere on this site and was asked which library to use, I chose the most recent previous library. iTunes 10.7 opened with all my music - playlists, play counts, etc. The only thing different from before is that it says "Previous iTunes Libraries" across the top of the screen above the Apple logo.

But now I'm wondering if I will have problems later eg. when I want to add more music to iTunes, if I have to restore from backup again in the future, or if I someday install another (hopefully better) version of iTunes. Will iTunes then get confused because I haven't changed the file names? Or will everything work normally?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Copy the library file you are currently using up to iTunes

    Rename as iTunes Library.itl

Hold down shift as you start iTunes, keep holding until asked to choose or create a library

Choose the new copy of the library file

Thanks! That worked perfectly (and I think I see now how I got it wrong the first time .... )

Finally got it sorted, thank you for your help. 10.7 was like an old friend making a welcome return.

Where is this file? I wouldnt mind deleting it all and starting over with 10.7. I have 10.7 downloaded, but it will not install due to the same error as others mentioned above. I can drag my music back into itunes, that does not bother me at all.

Thanks for the help with reverting to iTunes 10.7. My iTunes was set to update automatically on my work machine. It was quite the Monday morning horror to find 11 on my computer when I got to work this morning. Your help was invaluable in restoring iTunes and, consequently, my sanity. I'm not sure what Apple was thinking when they released 11, but it certainly wasn't about what their customers wanted....

It's growing on me, but it's a radical shift. We shall see how it develops. In the meantime I'm glad you're back with a version you are more comfortable with.

    Please read  this post.

It's purpose is to restore an older copy of the iTunes Library.itl file that is compatible with the earlier version of iTunes that you're installing. You don't have to discard your ratings, playlists, play counts etc., just provide an older copy of the library that works with the earlier version.

I can scarcely express my disgust.  I have used iTunes to manage podcasts that I get from a variety of sources.

    1. When I first updated to iTunes 11, none of my podcasts would update, and at least two of my subscriptions (both Wall Street Journal related) didn't appear in my podcast suscription list, even after I re-subscribed.

    2. I was finally able to remove iTunes 11 and revert back to iTunes 10.6 (then 10.7).  But in both older versions, I was no longer reliably able to manually transfer podcasts from my hard disk onto my iPod Shuffle.  Drag and drop worked for some files but not for others.

    3. I have once again updated to iTunes 11 but once again, podcasts I subscribe to do not show up in my "Podcasts" window.

This mess confronts me right after I bought a new Shuffle to replace the old, broken one.  I'm ready to register a warranty complaint with Apple.  What a FUBAR.

Found it and I am starting from scratch. Itunes 11 is really that bad! Horrible. I will never trust an update again as this is the 2nd time this has happened. I havent been able to undo the java oracle update yet.

I'm glad my 10.7 rollback seems to be working now.

I'm still steamed at Apple. I don't pay the ridiculous apple premium and a closed ecosystem just so I can be a bleepin' beta tester for junk that never should've made it out of alpha.

First IOS6 and Maps went totally wrong, now iTunes 11. From comments about this 'new' version, its only the critics (who I take it don't actaully use it) say it's good. All the user community say the totla opposite and want iTunes 10.7 back.

Are Apple listening? It seems not. Nothing on the Apple site about Maps or iTunes being fixed or just binned and reverting back to Google Maps and iTunes 10.7.

Alas it's use poor users who suffer and, boy are we suffering. Just wondering if the top team at Apple want us to go buy another mobile/player/tablet that's not made by Apple? Unless something is done, thats the way a lot of us will go.

I used to be able to type in an artist in the search and just their songs popped up.  Then I'd be able to play just those songs.  Now when I type in the search, it just tries to guess what I'm looking for and jumps to what you select.  (It actually doesn't even show the song I'm looking for even though I can see it in my library.)  Does anyone know how to get the old way of searching to work again?  Thanks!
