Why can't I view my "wmv" video on my Macbook Pro?

Trying to view an older video I found with a ".wmv" extension. It won't recognize the file format. Why?

Install the free version of Flip4Mac. If it doesn't work, that specific WMV is either DRM protected, corrupted, or contains malware.

Apple menu > System Preferences > Security > Gatekeeper > "Anywhere" click the lock and enter your Admin password if required.

Once that is completed, then download and install VLC here

and if that doesn't work, Flip4Mac
