frozen on initial Apple screen, even after repeated restarts

I was doing a software update and the process froze at about 90% complete. I turned off the computer and restarted it. The Apple screen came up but the computer froze on that screen with the "in prgress icon" spinning endlessly. I have restarted it several times with the same result. Has anybody successfully resolved a similar problem?
