second gen ipod overheated.

My bf's second generation ipod overheated on the dash of his truck. Went about one year without being used. Tonight, we tried turning it on again. It turns on but says to format the device in itunes. When we plugged it into the computer, at first itunes would not recognize it and the computer had it as drive f. When we plugged it in again, itunes recognized it, and prompted us to format it prior to use. It also said that this would delete all data on the device. Is there any way to save the music that was on there? He never used itunes much, so there is no liklihood that any of his music is saved on his itunes account anywhere, and we can't find his login info anyway.
