Ah ok. Well in that case then I do not suggest trying to use iCloud for that. It's not designed to be used as a backup application, it's more for syncing between devices etc. Now, for backing up your iPhoto library, I highly suggest taking a look at Time Machine instead if you're not already using it. I've attached the Time Machine article below. Hope that helps! 🙂

Kiana ± See my reply to Klaus. I am using Time Machine but am concerned about theft and fire. I wouldn't want to lose all my pics. A 2nd external hard disk that I remove and keep safe would be an answer, but not very convenient.

system preferences>> iCloud>> manage : shows 5MB storage available/ 0 used. All the  literature, press and books I have seen say "storage". It would be good if it worked my way.

Sorry about that raybry, I didn't read the other response you posted. Yes, a second external HD would be inconvenient....what about something like Carbonite? I mean, it's not the only company, but there are online backup options. Also, if you're concerned about theft of backups, you can encrypt your Time Machine backup so if it DID get stolen, it cannot be accessed.
