First time poster.
Today, without thinking it through I attempted to download Safari 6 to my 2008 MacBook which currently runs 10.5.8.
Needless to say, things didn't end up well and now I have nil operational Safari. Any way of fixing?
I have original operating system set up discs but hoping for a solution without losing hard drive data.
Any assistance appreciated.

Yes, it doesn't work with Leopard!
You will have to delete it and re-install Safari 5.0.6.
This doesn't seem to be a solution. I have deleted the newest version of Safari from all locations I am aware of on my Leopard, but when I try to install the older version, it still will not allow me to.
So what is a Leopard to do for a browser now? Any suggestions? Please help. Thank you!

I am an amateur (clearly) at this so looking for clarification.
After my recent download of Safari 6 effort, my MacBook now no longer seems to recognise Safari. When I click on the Safari icon on toolbar, nothing happens. I am currently using an iPhone to access Internet.
When I check the Applications folder of my hard drive the version of Safari listed is 6.0.2.
As Safari is not working on this laptop at all (mid 2008 MacBook), how do I connect my laptop to Internet to be able to download 5.0.6?
Or do I have to use an external hard drive and time machine my files and use the original OS X install discs-and then time machine my files back onto laptop? I'm assuming reinstalling OS will wipe all my existing data?
Reluctant to do anything that will cause data to be lost as have photos, study assignments etc on this laptop. If it all gets too hard, I am considering just buying a new computer if I have to-it's a 4 1/2 year old MacBook after all.
Please help.

I ended up calling an Apple support technician.
Deleted Safari version 6 easily enough & attempted to reinstall the Safari that came with the MacBook via 1 of the install Discs. This version turned our to be Safari v 3 (disc dated 2008). I have not used time machine - ever.
After reinstalling Safari v 3, the message on screen states that the 'version is too new for the operating system'. Doing a software update didn't help as message advised there were 'no new updates'. I do not know why-perhaps updates not being provided to an operating system that is now 4 versions old....?
All seems strange and apple technician was surprised and unable to remedy.
From what I can gather, only real options are to back up my existing files on to an external hard drive (I do not have an external hard drive) and reinstall everything via the 2 start up discs (wiping everything currently there) and then time machine saved files back onto the computer. Even then, the operating system on my install disc is 10.5.2. and would require updating to a newer operating system.
Either that or I purchase a new or refurbed computer.
I lean towarda the latter option choose to buy a new computer over coming weeks/months.
Not happy but lessons learnt.

Chalking it up to life experience. Clearly I will be much more careful with what I download in future.
Try Firefox.

...but don't I need access to Internet to download Firefox onto the MacBook...?

I have experimented and think this may be the simplest way to get you started:
1 - Open the Terminal application - in Utilities
2 - Type the following carefully - note: the character after 'curl -' is a capital letter O
curl -O icab.clauss-net.de/icab/iCab_501_UB.zip
3 - Hit the return key
4 - Wait a while for a browser called iCab to be downloaded to your Home folder
5 - Double click iCab_501_UB.zip in your Home folder to decompress it
6 - Drag the decompressed iCab folder to your Applications folder
7 - Double click iCab.app inside the iCab folder in Applications to start it
8 - Use the iCab browser to download other browsers such as:
A - Safari 5.0.6 - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1422
B - Firefox - http://mac.oldapps.com/firefox.php?system=mac_os_x_10.5_leopard_intel
Firefox is no longer supported for 10.5 Leopard.
Get TenFourFox and basically continue using Firefox. It gets all the necesssary Firefox security updates and will use all the Firefox Add-ons. If you have an Intel Mac, it will run under Rosetta/PPC emulation, which shouldn't slow you down much, if at all--at least give it a try. All your bookmarks, everything, will still be there. It will use your current Firefox Profile.
Plug-ins like Flash are disabled by default, but they can easily be reenabled. Although I would leave out Java and use Flash with discretion (get the FlashBlock Add-on, which will set a placeholder for Flash content), since there are known Flash exploits for older versions of Flash.

SeaMonkey may be better but it is not easy to find the latest version for Leopard on Intel - I think it may be somewhere between 2.1 and 2.13 - perhaps somebody can post a link to the information.
Spent some time with this. Unfortunately the zip file does not decompress and turns into a cpgz file when double clicked.
Looked at some forums and other info via google but with no luck and saw similar issues. I had no luck trying to resolve.
Feel like dropping this laptop from a very tall building. Will resist the temptation to do so and will keep this machine to allow access to photos and saved files.
I have now disconnected my Internet service in preparation for a house move next week. Used local library for net access today as part of the attempted icab process.
I have lost patience and am over it.

Clearly something wrong with your Mac's automatic decompression which needs fixing later but for now it is easy to use Terminal again:
1 - Open the Terminal application - in Utilities
2 - Type the following:
unzip
3 - type a space
4 - drag the file to be unzipped to the terminal window and release the mouse button
5 - hit the return key
6 - wait a while for a for the file to be unzipped and put into your Home folder
7 - follow my previous instructions from here.
