iTunes 11 - Do you HAVE to sync your iPhone apps with your Mac?

I've never understood the point in syncing and storing copies of all your iPhone apps on your Mac in iTunes. Is it actually necessary? What's the advantage? The Mac can't open or run any iPhone apps, so why have them on there at all?

I'd like to keep all of my apps on my iPhone, but stop syncing them with my Mac. What's the best/safest way to do this?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010) 12GB RAM
