Permanently disable/delete notifications

As I have no need of this facility and despite turning off all warnings in notifications I still get gmail etc notifications each day. I do not want to receive them.

I see from previous questions an answer seems to relate to writing code into terminal. Having tried to do that in the past it is something quite beyond me and it never works! Surely there is a simple key press to deactivate the whole caboodle?
