Shuts down

Using my iMac video flashed and it shut down. Tried to restart. White screen with Apple comes up to start and a bar at the bottom starts to fill in. It goes about an eighth of the way over bar disappears continues for about a minute to come up then goes so long and shuts back down. Any ideas? I believe this one is early 09 model. Can't get to about this Mac to see the model number.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

Or...

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
