2010 27inch Cinema Display with new 13" MBP Retina

When I connected my old 2010 27inch cinema display to my new MBP 13" Retina, the display stays black- however, it is listed in settings as being connected.

When I Gather Windows I have access to its settings and can set the screens to mirror or extend - so it sees the display is connected, but it stays dark.

I am just connecting the display connector to one of the MBP Thunderbolts ports...

Any ideas?
