What update are you attempting to accomplish?
Apple has discontinued iDVD.
from 7.1.1 to7.1.2 I updated software for OS X to Mountain lion and ever since then my iDVD does not recognize DVDs or will not burn a DVD
Perhaps your DVD drive is inoperative. Mountain Lion and iDVD 7 work perfectly fine.
iDVD 7.1.2 update:
I can burn CDs and it recognizes CDs and sometimes it recognize the DVD
Have you tried with this download link:

I'm surprised you wouldn't have 7.1.2 already since it came out last year. There were some problems with iDVD during early Lion iterations last year and I sent in many bug reports - Apple responded and fixed them all and I haven't had a problem using it since. It does occasionally throw a little fit such as not wanting to recognize some audio I want to use in the menu instead of the default, but will work in the end.
If that update does not work - how did you install iDVD in the first place? If you have iLife retail disks, I'd suggest deleting what you have and reinstalling, then updating to the latest version. That's what I've been doing - I actually start with iLife 08 (needed for the install of the old iMovie HD 6 which I prefer to work with), install iMovie HD, then go to iLife 09, and finally to iLife 11 (with updates in between).

This is not related to your OS X upgrade.
If it reads and writes CDs but not DVDs then it is likely your optical drive's DVD laser diode has degraded or become inoperative.
Try another brand of DVD media.
John is there anyway to fix that

Yes, replace the optical drive or use an external one.
Shop for one at OWC / MacSales:
I didn't want to hear that definitely fun I have a 27 inch iMac

Replacement is fairly simple.

My iDVD will not update
I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro (the good one with a built-in optical drive).
I installed iDVD from the iLife 11 disc. I then downloaded the latest update, and installed it without difficulty.
As far as I can tell, iDVD is working perfectly with Mountain Lion. I know many others that are using it successfully with Mountain Lion as well.
IDVD remains very popular in the Macintosh community.
