FCPX in Snow Leopard Vs Lion

Hi there,

I am waiting for the new 27" iMac to arrive at my place of residence.

My present iMac is running on Snow Leopard while the new iMac will of course in Lion. I intend to keep both separately in two different places and have no intention to upgrade the Snow Leopard. I will keep it as it is.

Problem is my present 2TB FW800 Lacie ext HDD is almost full, left about 5GB.

I will be buying a Stardom 6TB USB ext HDD to rescue it.

QUESTION 1:

If I copy the content from the Lacie to the Stardom and connect the Stardom to present old Snow Leopard iMac, will it work ? Will I need to relink all the files ?

QUESTION 2:

If I copy the content from the Lacie to the Stardom and connect the Stardom to the new Lion iMac, will I need to relink all the files?

Thanks

15.4, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 27" iMac - 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 1GB ATI Radeon HD, i5 QuadCore

Your new iMac will run Mountain Lion not Lion.

1. Yes.

2. The events and projects will load normally.

Is the Stardom USB2 or 3? If it's 2 get sonething else.

The stardom is a USB 3.0, FW800 eSata. Thnaks for pointing out it will be Mountain Lion.

I am thinking of getting the model SR4.

Just one question for my knowledge. How come in the first case I need to relink but it will load normally in the second case when the name of directory will be differenct, with the Lacie the events and projects will be in the folder Lacie\Final Cut Events where as after copying the events in the Stardom will be in Stardom\Final Cut Events ?

Thanks

The applications reads the events and projects on the drive in the appropriate folders. The file path starts there not at the drive name.

May I ask if if after copying the Lacie to Stardom and I connect the Stardom to the prsesent Snow Leopard iMac (and disconnect the iMac totally from the Lacie) (ie case 1), how come I need to relink when the both the Lacie and Stardom are the exact copy ?

Thanks

You will only need to relibnk if the media is not in the events folders. Any copying of events and projects should be done from inside the application and not at the Finder level. Any relinking and organizing of events can and should be done inside the application.

Thanks Tom,

But I am sorry I am bit confused. I will state here how I understand you. So, please tell me whether I understand it correctly or wrongly.

1. My Lacie has a folder called "Final Cut Events" and a folder called "Final Cut Projects".

2. Whatever media that that I ingested should be in the Final Cut Events sub-directory.

3. Assuming that I everytime I imported media into the Events, I always chose "Optimized media", so this optimized media file should also be some where inside the Final Cut Events subfolder

4. So when I copied both the "Final Cut Events" folder and the "Final Cut Projects" folder from the Lacie into the Stardom ext HDD, I will have two exact copy. So, whether I connect the Lacie or Stardom with my current iMac, they should work exactly the same.

5. If follows that since the Lacie & Stardom are both the exactly the same, both also should work exactly the same if I were to connect either the Lacie or Stardom with the new iMac.

QUESTION 1:

Are all my 5 statements above correct ?

QUESTION 2:

(Not going to do this but for my understaning). If I were to daisy chain both the Lacie & Stardom, when I import media or ingest any videos, where would FCP X put the file ? Into the folder of "Final Cut Events" in the Lacie or Stardom ?

Thanks

1. Seems to be.

2. If the two drives are identical, sometimes FCP will only show you one of them. Assuming you see both drives FCP will will put the media in whatever event you select.

Thanks Tom,

For (1), I take it as you meant "seems to be correct"

For (2), If I see both, FCP X will prompt to ask me which HDD I want it to locate ? How do I configure FCPX to "inform" FCPX which is the default/preferred HDD ?

Thanks
