So neither the latest Firefox OR the latest Safari works with Leopard.
What are we to do?
I am a little peeved and a little panicked at the same time.
Is this where I'm being forced to upgrade, ie. I have no choice?

As you use a PowerMac, it's recommended to use an Intel computer because PowerPC are discontinued and programs are losing compatibility with PowerPC
While it is harsh to hear, get used to it, Chrome is also supposedly dropping support for 10.5
You can keep running what you have, but the bottom line is that most developers are not interested in the effort needed to continue legacy support for 10.5. Leopard does not support WebGL, and since Apple does not support it any longer either, that puts the emphasis squarely on the web browser developers to maintain security patches. For an OS with such a small markety share, it is just not worth it to the developers.

The 'About This Mac' box didn't include that information, so I had to look it up.
I am on an iMac, not a PowerMac.

If there is no browser that is safe to use then I am forced to upgrade.

You can use Snow Leopard. Buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard Then, make a backup, insert the DVD and upgrade. Finally, open > Software Update and install the most recent version
