Locked out of iPod

iPod screen reads as follows, "iPod disabled, connect to iTunes" ; however, I can not connect to iTunes because upon opening iTunes I am given a warning dialog box which reads, "iTunes could not connect with the iPod because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iPod before it can be used with iTunes". Gack! ***???!!! So, I have to connect to iTunes because the iPod has been disabled by my daughter entering the passcode WRONG who knows how many times, but I can not log into iTunes because iTunes can not connect with the iPod until the passcode is entered into the iPod & the iPod is logged on?!?!?!?! Tell me please, exactly what in the heck am I supposed to do in order to assist my daughter with getting back into her iPod now????
