I tried to format a 500 gb. external drive with disk utility in snow leopard. keep getting input/ output errors. had to use a pc. what is going on apple with disk utility?

So, your PC formatted it HFS+ and enabled journaling? Paucity of details, including OS version, HD type, connection, formatting, partition map scheme, etc. makes responding very difficult.
I used a pc with windows 7, I have a imac with macosx 10.6.8 version. My external drive was a seagate 500gb.
I have it connected using a usb port.I use a disk utility from the computer and then tried the snow leopard instalation disk . I tried to use extended journalling and it wouldn't finish. I don,t know if the dist utility has a problem or if this info will be any clearer.
Thanks for the details. All I can suggest is to try again. If the HD mounts, then launch DU and see what it shows for the formatting and map scheme. If it mounts, then you shouldn't have any issue erasing and reformatting it.
So you don't feel there is a problem with the DU in snow leopard?
Shouldn't be. However, those I/O errors should be occurring on the ext HD. It might be going south. BTW, I didn't know a windows box could format an ext HD with HFS+, since I don't use one.
I've formatted countless drives with Disk Utility in Snow Leopard and never had a problem, so I think the problem is far more likely to be in the drive, or perhaps the USB port on your Mac, rather than in DU. If you haven't already done so, you might try allowing DU to create a new partition on the drive and see if that helps.
