How can I unlock the user folder after Lion server Update

I have recently upgraded My Xserve from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5 and it all went haywire. After I installed and updated everything to lion I lost general control of most of the system. I can log in as an admin and client file shares are intact but my "Users" folder is locked and my admin account – though it can log in and install, cannot get access to it's home folder. I can't seem to open system preferences to create a new user, the jabber server won't let anyone connect through Messages and none of the client users are modifiable in the Server app.

Xserve, Mac OS X (10.7.5), 6 Gb Ram, 2.5 Tb HD, 2.26 Mhz Quad

I would venture that you will run into many more problems beyond just this.

I would look at a clean install with a migration of your service settings from the old 10.6 server.

Wuold be better to have a known-good system.

More work now, but confidence going forward.
