What is bridge mode on the airport extreme base station

In our new home I have a DSL router that is also the phone company's wireless base station. For a variety of reasons I don't want to use the telco's wireless network but I know my internal (say Airplay) network runs like a pig here and it ran fine at my old place. I had a cable router in my old place that did not have wireless capabilities so I'm suspecting there is some kind of contention between the Airport base station and the DSL router. The base station is connected to the DSL router via Ethernet. I have my Apple TV on the same wireless network (Airport based) as my MAC. When I try to watch MAC movies on my AppleTV using AirPlay its glacial....

Typically when you have two routers in series you will want to reconfigure the downstream router (in this case the AirPort Extreme) as a bridge. You would do this via the AirPort Utility. Assuming that you are using version 5.x of this utility, the following would be the basic steps to reconfigure it: AirPort Utility > Select the Extreme > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection tab > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode) > Update > allow the Extreme to restart.

Thanks. That's the way I have it set up. My internal (AppleTV to MAC to iPad to printer) network is soooo slow here in our new place that I thought it might have something to do with the two routers. I have a Time Capsule acting as the wifi base station for all these devices.... I know our DSL link is slow here, but our internal network should be zinging. Is there any way to check the actual throughput of the internal network?
