Unable to mount USB 3 drive on mid-2008 MBP

I thought USB 3 was backward compatible when plugged into USB 2 ports, but cannot access a USB-3 Seagate drive from my older Macbook Pro (OS is Mountain Lion).

The drive is formatted for a Mac.
