True...but when it asks how you want people to contact you for facetime or imessage, it has my wife's phone number. Not only can I not facetime or imessage her (because the iPad uses her number) I get all of her text messages instead of mine.

I suggest you use your own Apple ID instead of your wife's.

If you do not have an Apple ID, click the link below:

You need a valid e-mail address.

https://appleid.apple.com

For FaceTime:

Settings > FaceTime > Apple ID (your wife's ID) > Sign Out then sign in with your Apple ID

For Messages:

Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > Apple ID (your wife's ID) Sign Out and do the same as FaceTime.

Note: You can use the same Apple ID for purchases so that your family can share Apps, Music and Books.

Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Apple ID (use hers if she's the one doing the purchases)

You can share up to 10 devices.🙂

I guess a more precise question is...how do I change the phone number associated with my Apple ID? I've looked everywhere on the website and even where it asks for day, evening, and mobile phone numbers, that doesn't update the number associated with your ID.

yes. we have 2 iphones and an ipad. all with the same Apple ID. Never had any issues with the ID until the we purchased the ipad. You would think there was a way to change the phone number on your ID without establishing an entirely new account. Seems like a simple enough task.

Each of you should have an Apple ID because there are many services iMessage, FaceTime and iCloud, etc.

You were saying you are getting her text messages, didn't you? To solve this and all other issues follow this tip:

iOS 5 & iCloud Tips: Sharing an Apple ID With Your Family

Note: It's still valid for IOS 6.0.1
