I can't get a newer GB recording from a friends computer to play on my GB '09--How do I add tracks?
How do I open a more recent friend's GB 'll recording on my older GB '09? Do I have to buy the new GB version?

If you want to be able to edit GB '11 projects, yes, you will have to buy the new version. GB '11 can open GB '09 projects, but not vice versa, sorry.
You will have to update your Mac OS X as well, the most recent GB '11 version (GarageBand 6.0.5) requires Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later.
